Justin Gage (vs. NYJ): If Gage had only stayed healthy all season and played at the level he's at right now, then he'd be a starting Fantasy option every week. He has eight catches for 194 yards and three touchdowns against Chicago and Jacksonville, and the Jets pass defense is among the worst in the NFL. Look for Gage to stay hot, and Kerry Collins continues to look in his direction. He was targeted six times last week against Jacksonville and made the most of his opportunities by averaging 36.8 yards per catch. You can count on Gage as a No. 2 Fantasy wide receiver this week. Funny....They have him under start em for fantasy football. No respect for Revis who is a shut down corner.
That's such ignorant commentary on the part of CBS sports. How many NUMBER ONE receivers (i.e. the guy Revis is covering in man to man) have had big games against the Jets this season????
A lot of pissed off Gage owners come sunday. Its like saying that playing the WR lining up across from Asamougha is a good idea because Oakland sucks. Its ignorant.
It's a fantasy site. If you cast aside your biases and look objectively for a moment, you'll see that this game features a top ranked Jets running D that is simultaneously a bottom ranked passing D, and a Titans QB tht is talked of as an MVP candidate. In that environment it's more than reasonable ot expect he will get lots of opportunities (because of the strength/weaknesses of the D), and many of them will be makeable catches (because of QB). Fantasy sites are looking at completely different things -- individual stats, without any context of winning or losing the game -- than pure football sites, so I'd suggest not reading this much into them.
While the italicized portion is correct I expect more from these fantasy analysts. They should know individual matchups. I hear more educated commentary from the fantasy guys I hear on Czaban's show or Myers/Farnham.
Psst..... Kerry Collins ....... Try throwing Ty Law's way..... Test him hes only about 38yrs old..... Justin Gage is top 10 wr in the league, obviously. I cant wait for this week they are going to throw at ty law all game and im calling it Law is gonna have atleast one pick, him or Lowery who ever they decide to pick on. Lets face it Titans receivers get the job done cuz they are tall and I dare say can catch? (Justin McCareins???) They arent good they are average, but the run game makes them look better. What are Lowery and Law's downfall..... They are "slow" guaranteed we match up their Wrs and none of them get any catches longer than 15yds
I hear what you are saying but that is a very superficial, and in my opinion, poor analysis on the part of CBS Sports as to why one should expect Gage to have a big game. It's not sufficient to say that "this team sucks against the pass and this receiver had a big game last week and is really talented, so he's a good bet to have a big game against this sucky pass defense". Football just doesn't work that way. (I guess this is a complaint I have about the sports media in general - I notice a serious lack of in-depth, thorough analysis. Every "argument" is tailored to be laid out in two sentences or less with no room for reflection.) Football is a game of individual matchups, player vs. player and scheme vs scheme. Even a slightly less cursory analysis would reveal that few number 1 receivers have had big games against the Jets this year. (Anquan Boldin is the only guy I can think of and that didn't start until after it was 35-0 and the Jets resorted to 3-deep zone coverage on the majority of plays) With even just a tad bit more scrutiny, one recognizes that the Jets have one of the best cover corners in the league and that the Jets often choose to match him up with the other team's best receiver. I would respect the analysis a lot more if it pointed out that the Jets have had a lot of trouble covering TEs in space and could easily struggle with Scaife.
The problem with using team and season long stats to rank a team's pass D is that it provides equal weigting to early season games that are not necessarily a good indication of what to expect next week. Having said that we all know the Jets gave up huge yardage to NE, but some significant component of that was when they were way ahead and in the prevent - circumstances that tend to inflate the opponent's total passing yardage, obviously. Conversely teams that have been muddling along and playing poor run D will tend to not get thrown at as much, and will give up less total passing yards.
It's unfortunate the OP did not include the link, but my hunch is if he did, you'd find out that this is probably just coming from no-name armchair wonk who merely has a blog on a site loosely affiliated with (i.e owned by) CBS Sports. i.e. the some unpaid wannabe fantasy owner that is self-selected, and doesn't know much more about the actual players or teams than the numbers printed in Monday's papers. My hunch. In that context I suggest just heeding the spirit of LookingForDWare's avatar:
 I hope we knock him on his ass a few times. Gage is a good receiver, but I think Revis and co. line up well against the Titans receivers.
Seeing the Jets put Revis on Welker last Thursday, I have a feeling Revis is going to be covering Scaife because he really is the Titans top receiver and you have to take the guy over the middle out of the game if you want to pressure the QB. Which means that Ty Law will probably be covering Gage (again, assuming the Pats game is an indicator). And then Lowery will be covering whoever Tennessee's WR2 is. I don't even know who that is. Is it McCareins? I really hope so.
