    All,

As a lifelong diehard Jets fan, I certainly enjoy reading and posting this board. But since Thursday, I have been reading posts by Sunshiners acting as if Darksiders are irrational in expecting the worst from this team. All that tells me is that most (not all for sure) of these Sunshiners know little or nothing about this franchise's history. So I've put together a little history lesson for everyone so we can all be on the same page about the misery that the Jets have given their fans during their history.

My memory of the Jets only goes back to 81, so this is not comprehensive. I will leave the more recent years - Parcells, Groh, and Edwards to others if they want to post on this thread.

    1981 Regular Season/Playoffs:

    December 27, 1981 - Bills-Jets

The Jets ended their regular season with a 28-3 win over the Packers, and headed into the playoffs for a Wild Card game against the Bills at Shea.

On the opening kickoff, the normally sure-handed Bruce Harper fumbled. Soon after, Wesley Walker dropped a sure TD pass. The Jets were losing 24-3 late in the first half, before cutting the lead right before the half to 24-10. Todd, by the way, threw two INTs in the first half to go with Harper's fumble.

In the second half, the Jets clawed their way back into it despite going down 31-13, cutting the lead to 31-27. But in the end, Todd threw his 3rd pick of the game at the goal line.

Thus ended my first year as a Jets fan.

    1982 Regular Season/Playoffs

    December 18, 1982. Jets-Dolphins

For the oldtimers on this board, we all remember that in the 80s, the Jets' biggest rival was the Fins, not the Pats*. This game about killed me, because it was a game that the Jets could have and should have won.

In the game, the Jets, on a Pat Leahy FG, take a 19-17 lead entering into the final minutes of this game. Leahy, however, has missed an extra point, his fifth of the year. The Fins got the ball back for one final drive. On that final drive, the Fins QB Don Strock nearly was intercepted by Bobby Jackson, the left corner. An interception would have given the Jets the victory (This was just like the ball that Cassell threw RIGHT TO Lowery that would have sealed the win on Thursday).

Instead, Uwe von Schamann kicked a 47-yard field goal with three seconds to play for a 20-19 victory over the Jets.

    1982 Playoffs:

The heartbreak continued that season after the Jets get great road playoff wins against the Raiders and the Bengals (in subzero weather), only to lose to a less talented Dolphins teams on a rain-soaked quagmire of an Orange Bowl field, made worse by a scumbag move by Don Shula, who ordered the field left uncovered as the rain fell in Miami in order to slow down the Jets' great cutback runner, Freeman McNeil.

    1986 Regular Season/Playoffs:

This Jets team started 10-1, only to lose its last five and limp into the playoffs. Talk about a darksider's worst fears coming true.

Still, the Jets beat the Chiefs in the first round of the playoffs and then and headed to Cleveland to play the Browns.

    Jets-Browns: January 3, 1986

The Jets held a 20-10 lead with a little more than four minutes remaining in regulation.

That's when Bernie Kosar, with only one timeout remaining, led a pair of scoring drives. One went for a touchdown (helped by a key roughing-the-passer call against Mark Gastineau), and the other ended with Moseley's tying field goal with only 7 seconds remaining.

On that awful Gastineau play, it was second and 24. Kosar threw an incomplete pass, but Gastineau was called for a late hit. It kept alive the drive, on which Kosar completed 6 of 9 passes.

The Jets then lost in double-OT.

    1991 Regular Season

    Jets-Bears - September 23, 1991 - The Blair Thomas Fumble Game

This is my all time worst Jet memory (hence my screen name):

Jets are playing the Bears on MNF in Chicago. It is a chance for the Jets to show off their top pick, RB Blair Thomas out of Penn State, to a national TV audience.

The Jets were leading, 13-6, late in the fourth quarter. The Jets were trying to run out the clock in their own territory for the win against a much better Bears team. The Jets handed the ball to Blair Thomas, who ran up the middle, got hit, started to stumble, and then got hit again and fumbled with less than two minutes to play.

Bruce Coslet, by the way, could have had Ken O'Brien kneel down and then punt it away to the Bears with less than a minute left in the game. Instead he handed it to the biggest bust in NYJ draft history.

What followed was simply a nightmare. The Jets gave up a game-tying touchdown as time expired in regulation time (anyone remember Cassell and Moss Thursday night?).

In OT, the Jets missed a chip shot 28-yard field goal and then gave up a touchdown with less than a minute to go in overtime.

    1994 Regular Season:

    Dolphins - Jets - November 27, 1994

The Jets are 6-5 and hosting the Fins for a game that will decide first place in the AFC East. The Jets jump out to an early 24-6 lead (anyone recognize that score from Thursday night?), and the Meadowlands is rocking.

Of course, the Pete Carroll-coached Jets let the Fins back into the game, and then Dan Marino then pulled his Fake Spike on the sleeping Jets on the 8 yard line for the winning touchdown.

The Jets lost out the rest of the season. What followed? Richie K. and 4-28.

    http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpa...958260&scp=3&sq=jets+fake+spike+marino&st=nyt

So please, I don't want to hear any more about how I should be more optimistic and positive about the Jets this year. I hope and pray that they win it all, but history tells me to expect something else.

This year is about saying FUCK YOU to the past and knowing that with a new attitude it doesn't matter anymore.

This thread perpetuates the problem. Fuck this thread and the mentality that follows it.

A new culture must be created. This is the old culture and it must die a terrible death.

Here's the wretched Blair Thomas fumble game

we still made the playoffs that year, in miraculous fashion...so while it was a bad loss it didn't really cripple the team.

No offense, but your view doesn't change anything about this team. Saying "FUCK YOU" to the past does not make the past go away. I hope this year is different, but guess what, you can't unmake history and pretend it didn't happen. Otherwise you end up doing this:

I'll think differently about the Jets when they end a season differently than they have for the past 40 years.

I posted this so people can UNDERSTAND why some of us are pessimistic. Again, should we all pretend that the Jets have a storied history like the Steelers, Cowboys, and 49ers? Yeah, I am only highlighting the bad Jet playoff experiences instead of the good ones

Turk, since I am only posting "everything wrong about with this franchise," how about posting all of your positive Jet memories - say all of the Super Bowls we've won in the past 20 years?

I want this team to win, but I have to say I was shocked that the Jets pulled it out the other night. I hope this is the start of something new with Farve, but I am not going to be all sunny just because of one big win.

Thanks for the link. I think that game did ruin Blair Thomas. He ran well before that fumble but he never was the same after that.

I understand where you are coming from and I will root hard for the Jets every week and hope for the best, but until they win the big one, I'm not going to buy into the sunshine viewpoint.

Do yo know when your life starts to be better, its when you learn to release all the negativity in your life and focus on the positive. Im not even talking about football specifically, but life in general. This does however translate into other areas of your life. Quite frankly you sound like a woman who has been cheated on so many times she now will never trust men again and thinks everyone of them is a bastard. You need to let the past go, shed the negativity join ship with the rest of us who have hope that this team can turn it around. Now Im not saying you should pretend that the past never happened, but you seriously need to get over it and start trusting this team again. I understand that you have been hurt/let down so many times over the years that now its just easier to assume the worst and this way, if anything positive happens its great, but if the "same old jets" show up you dont leave yourself open for more pain.

Now, did you see how ridiculous that last sentence was? Its football, not marriage or children or any other important life problem. All your really doing is preventing yourself from TRULY enjoying the season, always telling yourself "well that win was great but they are going to fuck it up next time". But fine, if you want to be miserable all season like the rest of the darksiders go ahead, it really doesnt effect me, but theses boards and Jets fans in general would benefit greatly from some mutual excitement and positivity.

WHO f'n cares dude. Have you ever had a QB even remotely at the level of Favre (a future HOF, top 5 QB of ALL TIME)? NO. So who cares about the past.

YOU JUST BEAT YOUR MOST HATED TEAM IN THEIR STADIUM. FOR first place in the division and posting crap like this. Who CARES!

And not all of us are all "sunny". We're just happy and looking forward to the future.

And if you think the Jets have had some horrible past, your spoiled. Do I need to list all the teams that have never even won a Super Bowl? The Cardinals have NEVER even won the division. They have never even hosted a playoff game. Yet I guarantee if you go on a Cards board there are not even as negative as some of you are.

Your 7-3. Won 4 in a row. 6 of the last 7 games. Have BRETT F'N FAVRE as your QB, first place in your division and your still being negative. What gives.

You are entitled to your opinion and I wish I could share your green-colored glasses outlook. Every week I root for the Jets to win and hope this year will be different. But let me ask you, did you watch those games I mentioned above? If so, and you are still positive, I tip my hat to you.

Dude, I don't secretly hate the Jets. I've been rooting for them for 27 years.
