I know making this comparison is moot at this point, but seeing how they both are tackling machines, and their vitals are almost identical, I wonder how Vilma would have fared playing behind a beast like Jenkins.

Having Harris and Vilma at ILB would have looked good...

Vilma would need to put on 15lbs of pure muscle to be like Mayo.

Mayo is 6'1 242, Vilma 6'1 230. It makes all the difference in the NFL.

Vilma is just too small. He's great and I love him, and miss watching him play, but he's too small.

Well there is no question Vilma could have helped out with our biggest weakness, the coverage abilities of our LBs. The real question is what that would have done to our run defense, considering the animal that Barton has become.

i was completely and totally impressed with mayo last night. far better than i would have imagined. the kid was everywhere. i dont know his final stats but he made a TON of plays within 2 yards of the line of scrimmage. there also wasnt any yards after contact when he hit someone. he hit em and they went backwards.

very impressive player at this point.

I agree Vilma could have benefited from Jenkins being up front.Vilma got into Manginis doghouse for more than what we are being told.

I'd rather have Harris and Mayo there. We'd be set for years.

Vilma didn't extend his contract with Aints yet, did he? I want him back.

Barton/Harris/Vilma and ILB position would be set for a good 2-3 years. It's good to have depth, and (Barton or Harris) and Vilma for passing downs will cover the weakness against short passing game to a degree - no?

You know how much will have to pay him? Were not getting him back and plus he doesn't want to be in a 3-4 defense

Substitutions and depth, obvious running plays the 3 big guys come in, obvious passing plays Vilma and Harris are in. You can never have enough depth.

there is a salary cap though so you absolutely can have too much depth.

Thats not true, you still cant have enough depth. Just because the cap makes it normally impossible, does not mean that you cant have enough.

but vilma is a big cap hit, and definitely will be next year. you cant have enough cheap depth but he wouldnt necessarily be that.

sorry i should have clarified. i was referring to vilma not just in general.

Vernon will be there for the OUTSIDE backer position. We need a fast side-to-side ILB on top of that.

Nothing worng with Vilam. He is avery good player and was one of my favorite Jets but he just isnt a 3-4 ILB. Harris and Barton is probably better then Harris and Vilma in the 3-4 set.

I don't know what you are talking about.

in 3-4, one of the ILBs (usually the bigger one) take care of the run stuffing and a bit of pass coverage, whereas the other one (usually smaller and faster) takes care of covering the middle and a bit of run support. If the ILB has to shed the block, that's Harris's job.
