The Yankees are exploring a possible bid for free-agent second baseman Orlando Hudson, and are intrigued enough by Hudson's talent and reputation as an excellent clubhouse influence to bat around the possibilities of trading talented young second baseman Robinson Cano or even signing Hudson with the idea of moving him to centerfield. The Yankees' interest in Hudson could incite a crosstown battle with the Mets, who are weighing the idea of Hudson replacing Luis Castillo at second base for them. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/baseball/mlb/11/04/heyman.tuesday/index.html
I don't get this move. Are they committed to Cano, or not? And why continue with this "we can just move guys to different positions" BS? I was fine with moving ARod, since it was still Jeter's team, Jeter wasn't giving up his position, and ARod had/has the talent to make the switch. All of this "put him at first" or whatever moving around they want to do with these guys is stupid. Either sign a guy to play the position he's used to playing, or don't sign him. These stories are starting to reek of desperation. I don't like that.
I actually would not be opposed to Pavano coming back. He seems determined to prove that he is a good pitcher, one who was just incredibly unlucky. He tried pitching through injuries on a few occasions so he could help the club, but it ultimately led to further injuries. He seems to have learned his lesson, and if he signs for cheap, he could fill out the back of the rotation.
Good, get rid of that bum hughes. He has already cost us one great pitcher and done nothing but embarrass the team. "The odds of Matt Holliday being traded in the off-season continue to grow, with the Yankees' name consistently popping up as a possible suitor. One scenario that has been floated has Hideki Matsui going to Seattle, with the Yankees sending Colorado a package centered around Phil Hughes. (Denver Post)" http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/20607408/
hes 22 years old you dumbass. he was the 2nd youngest player in the majors year before last. he has 100 career innings pitched. he was the consensus number 1 pitching prospect year before last. it would be stupid to give up on him now especially since he costs no money.
22 years old...so what??? any major league team can call up a 18 or 19 year old prospect and say he is the youngest pitcher in the major leagues.
the point is they dont. and he threw a nohitter through six innings when he did get called up. he has suffered many injuries and the people that are saying we should trade him are probably the same ones that want to give up on vernon gholston already. clueless.
No way we should give up on Hughes. I'd like to see the Yanks bring in two arms Any combination of Sabathia/Burnett/Peavy would be fine; but I'd prefer the two with AL experience. Sabathia's workload the past two years and Burnett's history of being a bandaid worry me but not as much as the current rotation worries me so we might as well open our wallets. I'm all for bringing in Manny as long as he's the perminent DH. He's a beast at the plate and it'd be the ultimate F-U to the Bosox to bring this guy in and bash them up. If he doesn't have to play defense he's worth the money. Texiera would be very nice to pick up as well but I don't see it happening with our priorities being pitching #1 and Mark wanting a top-tier deal. No idea what we're doing with Abreu, Damon, and Cano. Personally I think Cano can rebound from his shitty 2008; Abreu was good but what kind of money does he deserve? Damon could be upgraded.
And he is sucking up the Arizona Fall League too. Maybe he has a career in A ball next year. Keep trying to convince yourself he has a future with the Yankees though, it keeps me laughing to read it. Without last night's game his ERA would be over 8 there too. As it is it's over 4 with 4 starts and only 17 innings.
I read somewhere that the Yankees are entertaining offers for Cano but are treating him like the star he was in '07 and not what he was in '08 and that is making it difficult to make a deal, if they even are serious about making one at all.
That's exactly how the Yankees should be playing it. If Cano is as good as the organization believes he can be next year, and they keep him, then treating him that way looks like genius in hindsight. If he's only average next year, or even if he plays like most of this year, he's traded for the same thing they'd get right now. If someone bites on him, and the Yankees get a good deal out of it, the Yankees win, whether he plays well elsewhere or not. It's a no-lose situation really. It's not like we're talking about Melky. Melky is, at least right now, a total bust. Cano still clearly has talent. It's desire that separates Cano from the elite players.
okay, and without his start 2 turns ago, his numbers would be as follows. 3 GS, 15 IP, 6 H, 6 BB (.8 WHIP), 1 ER, .6 ERA ... so yeah, other than one bad start, he's really "sucking up the Arizona Fall League"
I think Hughes, unlike Kennedy, had some nice moments. I mean he had almost no-hit stuff in that one outing. I wouldn't give up on him yet. I believe Cano's seemingly lax play does not work well under Girardi. I wouldn't be surprised if Cano goes, though I love him as a player. Last, I would love to see Brian Roberts or Hudson in stripes. Most likely scenario: If the Yanks move heavy on Sabathia, Peavy, Burnett and fall through on one of them, they sign Pavano for low money. Same thing with Tex and Giambi; the Yanks fan on Tex, they sign Giambi for low money.
