    http://www.jetsdaily.com/2008/11/midseason-review-part-1-inside-numbers.html

This week I will provide some of the numbers behind the 5-3 Jets this season. Some interesting, some startling, some confusing, but all important so far.

905-608. That is the difference in rushing yards between the Jets and their opponents this year. Gone are the days of teams gashing the Jets on the ground, while Thomas Jones and Leon Washington have done the job behind a revamped offensive line.

    15. The number of touchdown passes Brett Favre has thrown in half a season. Also the number of touchdown passes Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens combined totaled last season.

    29. The number of sacks the Jets have tallied this season, with Shaun Ellis having 7, Bryan Thomas, David Bowens, and Calvin Pace 4, Kris Jenkins 3, and Eric Barton, Kerry Rhodes, Darrelle Revis, and Hank Poteat each getting 1. 29 is also the number of sacks the Jets' defense manufactured all of last season.

    16. The number of times Brett Favre has been sacked. Compare this to the 53 times Jets quarterbacks were taken down last season. The offensive line has been night and day compared to last season, and that should only get better.

-4 With all the new sacks, protection, and touchdown-scoring the Jets have added this season, you would expect a better turnover ratio than -4. The dull, overmatched, dink and dunk Jets last season were -4 last season, too.

    7. The number of tackles Vernon Gholston has recorded so far. Add in the number of sacks, forced fumbles, recovered fumbles, and interceptions he's had so far, and it's still 7. The Jets insist he's making progress, but add another impact pass rusher to the defense, and think of the possibilities.

    4. Number of kickers and punters used by the Jets so far. Throw in Waylan Prather's short stay on the practice squad, and Ben Graham's return after his initial release, and it has been a crazy ride for the kicking game. Mike Nugent is still out, and who knows when he will be back. One note about Graham, the Saints just released him after one game last week.

    12.75 and 12.98.
What are these numbers? Well, 12.75 is the "scoreability index," created by Cold Hard Football Facts to rank efficiency in terms of yards and points. For every 12.75 yards the Jets earn, they score a point, good for 6th in the NFL and 3rd in the AFC. This shows the Jets have been very efficient, though we know at times that has not been the case. The 12.98 number is more disturbing, as it means the defense has only allowed 12.98 yards per point, 27th in the NFL. I imagine both of these numbers will regress to the mean, but the defense surely has more room to improve.

    4. Number of interceptions for Darrelle Revis, tied for the league lead. This despite teams rarely targeting him in favor of rookie Dwight Lowery who has held his own.

5-3, 2-1, 4-3. 5-3 is the Jets' overall record, tied for the division lead. 2-1 is the Jets' divisional record, with road wins over Miami and Buffalo and a home loss to New England. 4-3 is the Jets' conference record. These are the most three pieces of information when gauging a team and looking at their playoff chances, and the Jets are in good shape.

What pass rusher is standing out from last years draft?

Chris Long leads at 4 and he's starting.

Alex Hall has 3 and he's starting.

Gholston's been getting there. The sack will come...even if I'm a little less sure about that than other stuff.

Is there any way to show how many times Revis has been thrown at this season?

I know asamougha is around 10 this season. Thats insane- no one wants to throw at to him.

If anyone knows where to find this or other obscure stats, let me know please.

As for Gholston, I know he doesn't start, and I know Pace and Thomas have been very good, but if Gholston were that good/ready, he would have forced his way into the lineup by now.

I would love to find red zone TD percentage and red zone defense numbers such as point allowed per opponents redzone trip or TDs allowed per red zone trip.

This stat is extremely silly IMO. Yards per point? SO the defense get peanlized when the offense leaves them a short feild. In the same token, the offense benefits when the defense gives them a short field. Extremely stupid stat.

those 12.75 and 12.98 stats have to do with efficiency, mostly on first and 3rd downs.

they are very important if used properly

Gholston has been getting where exactly? He has four tackles and 0 sacks. In 8 games...pathetic.

    Biggest problems last season:

    poor rushing defense

no sacks / pressure on the QB

    no rushing offense

poor ability of the offense to score TD's instead of FG's

    bad protection for the QB

    *************************

All of these problems have been fixed ! Kudos to Tannenbaum and Mangini for that. Now if we could only get some good offensive and defensive playcalling, this team might actually become dangerous.

Exactly, by no means are they the be-all and the end-all, but they reflect on efficiency, and they show that the offense has scored more than one might expect, and the defense has allowed more points than one might expect.

Another stat that would be useful to know, is the run defense ypc only when Jenkins is in the play, and run defense ypc when Jenkins is not in the play.

Now, I know last game, outside of the one nasty hit Favre got on the int throw, that he was well protected. I doubt anyone though would call what the jets have on the OL, and have shown this year, as being "good" protection for the QB. The sack numbers are way down from last year, honestly, because Favre gets rid of the ball. Quick. He can throw it from any angle, and has that 6th sense of knowing where the defenders are around him.

AkA, I think it's apparent just by how much Favre has been getting HIT this year that the pass protection isn't better, just the QB is better at getting rid of it before the hit. #4 is still getting a lot of big hits on him every single game, he just isn't getting sacked. It's like Big Ben in pittsburg. He gets hit 5 times as much as he gets sacked. That is just not good pass protection.

I don't think the pass protection is all that great as you can see. Better then last year? Don't know, you didn't have #4 back there.

I'm not ready to write him off, but to say he's "getting there" is pure wishful thinking...

As of now, he's the same as he was in Week 1 of preseason, and, simply put- he's a bad football player.

His fundamentals suck, his technique sucks, his instincts suck, and, despite his muscle mass, he's physically overmatched.

I hope he can improve, but he's not making any visible progress...

this number would be better if it wasnt for all of the interceptions. and i think it will get better because i expect favre to continue to develop chemistry with the recievers and at the same time for the coaches to somewhat be able to understand how to create plays for favre. ints will still happen, but i really do think the worst is over.

It's definitely a combination of Favre's awareness and an improved OL. There is certainly room for much improvement in pass protection but we're light years ahead of what it was last year.

Great thread and interesting numbers indeed, Jetfanmack.

Very incouraging. Our Jets can and will emerge as playoff contenders. They just need to keep their noses to the grindstone.
