He got the most out of everyone around him. He held everyone to a higher standard and instilled discipline in everyone he came in contact with. But most of all? He was able to get his players to play very very hard for him.
Bowles jets wouldve played Holtz first week of the season, get out to an early lead, but let Holtz’s team hang around allowing them to move the chains w the same outside option play over & over again. Then with 3 minutes left, up 6 4th & 2 in Holtz territory Bowles would punt only to allow a QB scramble for a TD w the clinching extra point as time expires. Afterwards wed find out Bowles had prepped the team for the Namath era offense & that they didnt need to make any adjustments for the option.
I remember when people threw beer at Joe Walton a/k/a Then Nose Picker as he was going into the tunnel after his last game as the Jets HC (@ Giants Stadium). You can take the Jets fan out of Shea but you can't take the Shea out of the Jets fan, haha. Shea Stadium, I could write a book on the ushers alone. They were all 80+ years old. "You there, you stop that." Very effective way to break up a drunken brawl. Worked even better when it was a free for all.
The fact that Joe Walton lasted as long as he did is even more comical then Bowles lasting 4 years. That said, he was a better head coach then Bowles. Not saying much, but I do remember him being a very good off. coordinator for Walt Michaels. He loved play action deep after the defense turned the ball over.
He's the only coach in team history whose NYJ career covered more than two seasons who (has) never made the playoffs. He'd probably point to Michaels, who didn't make it until his fifth season, but too bad for him.
Gotta say, this took a lot of guts. Good on him. I still would have LOVED to see how LOLworthy it was.
Have you ever been to sites like Profootballtalk other fans still think we are a joke.No one respects us on any level as a football team or franchise. We are in the Browns type of category right now.
Browns have been bad but they at least had a rich history. They had an innovated legendary coach, the greatest running back in NFL history. We got a 50 year SB victory that 3/4 of the fanbase wasn't born when they won.
Word We are the biggest joke in the NFL I travel the country and it’s an embarrassment Most fans at least support their shit teams Like AZ, BUF, SF, even OAK But our fans and our team is a true fucking joke starting with me I hate this shit joke franchise
I must have been watching the wrong team these last 4 years... On second thought, he may have gotten the most out of his players but... it doesn't really matter if the talent and the system simply is not there.
it's a different kind of disrespect - we are now considered crap but we don't have that same circus / clown car reputation we had when Rex was at the end of his tenure with things like the foot scandal and the butt fumble
I'll take an honest stab at this one. He "helped" change the culture from the total circus that was under Rex Ryan. I think half of this was ridding ourselves on the primadonnas like Revis, Mo, and Sheldon, but we turned it around nonetheless. Maybe turning the special teams around? Westhoffs last years here were very underwelming for him and the unit was bad for several years. I finally feel much better about the unit and hope we retain Bryant Boyer under the next coach. ...Yeah thats really about it.
