Wannstedt had been coaching his alma mater since 2005, amassing a 42-31 overall record and 24-18 mark in the Big East. In 2010, the Panthers qualified for their third consecutive bowl appearance under Wannstedt, but took a big step backwards from the previous two seasons, when the Panthers went 9-4 and 10-3, respectively. Pitt came into the season with expectations as high as they had been in some time. The Panthers were ranked and predicted by many to qualify for a BCS bowl. Instead, inconsistent play saw them finish just 7-5 and headed to the BBVA Compass Bowl to face 6-6 Kentucky. The low points of the season would be a 31-3 loss to Miami at home and a 35-10 loss to rival West Virginia. The Panthers were also upset by UConn, 30-28, when they still had a good chance to get to the BCS. Frank Cignetti, the Panthers' offensive coordinator, has been named the interim coach for Pitt in the meantime.
Score! I was hoping for this from the day Pitt hired him. Here's to hoping that Cignetti never gets the "interim" taken off of his title.
Lousy coach who should've easily won a down Big East this year. Much better suited for a coordinator role than a HC.
