The icing on the cake would if he can be our PR. If I was Bowles I would give him extensive practice time as a PR. If he can do this it would be the perfect storm. Cannon our #4 running back & our #1 Punt Returner. Groom him for RB for next year when Powell will be gone. He could be our next Leon Washington..... w/more speed.
Guys. I literally said this after I saw him in person. Cannon is small. Think Robbie Anderson but shorter. I think his dreadlocks account for 30% of his body mass.
He's fast. Really fast. Blazing fast. With lightning-quick acceleration too. And speed kills. Speed can not be taught. But he's small. Really small @ 5'11 and only 185 lbs. That's almost Dri Archer type small. And Dri Archer I loved coming out of college. I mean. How many RB's 185 pounds or less have ever became NFL household names? Even Darren Sproles was listed at 190 lbs. Barry Sanders, 200 lbs. Marshall Faulk, 211 lbs. Thurman Thomas, 206 lbs. Eric Metcalf, 190 lbs. Dave Meggett, 190 lbs. Warrick Dunn, 187 lbs. Brian Westbrook, 203 lbs. Maurice Jones-Drew, 210 lbs. Kevin Faulk, 205 lbs. Curtis Martin, 210 lbs. Leon Washington, 203 lbs Danny Woodhead, 204 lbs. Chris CJ2K Johnson, 203 lbs. Just throwing out some names. I don't know. As you can see. 185 lbs is really small and really light for an NFL RB. Maybe that little small white RB, Tim Dwight, 185 lbs; although far from an NFL household name. Nonetheless should be fun following his journey moving forward. I'm rooting for him just not sure if too small or not.
[ It only takes one guy to buck a trend. Five years ago did you ever envision a 6 foot QB get drafted first overall?
If he can be a good returner that's a huge upgrade. Our return game has been dismal for years. Anything he can do at all on offense would just be icing on the cake.
Theres a long way to go before hes anything more than a late round pick w some physical ability however i think in this blocking scheme he has major major upside..His lateral movement & agility combined w his 5th gear make him perfect for a zone blocking scheme where its find the crease cut & go as well able to turn the corner on a dime to push upfield on outside runs. The fact that he can catch out of the backfield as well as pass block makes for a very exciting opportunity. I think his size does limit him but theres no reason at 5’11 he cant pack on 10-12 lbs & still be effective in space. Now that the jets Training staff have gotten ahold of him w their nutrition programs id expect he’ll be at least 190 in short order. Let him return kicks, punts(hopefully) & give him 10 or so plays a week on offense. I loved Dri Archer coming out of Kent State as well. That said he was only 5”8 174 & could not block.Hes faster than Cannon by a step but hes alittle more straight line w some shifts thrown in along the way.Cannon is more agile w better feet & can move east/west in space.
Well Baker Mayfield is listed at 6'1. Looks like a Steve Young out there (height wise) who they have listed at 6'2. But nonetheless there's been some really good to great shorter QB's 6'0 and under such as Fran Tarkenton, Sonny Jurgensen and Joe Theisman (all 3 before my time), everyone knows about Doug Flutie and recently with Michael Vick (6'0), Drew Brees (6'0) and Russell Wilson (5'11). But we're not talking height here. We're talking about weight. And 185 lbs is lightweight for a RB. I can't think of a single 185 lb RB (or less) outside of Tim Dwight. Because we all know Dri Archer tried, and failed. 185 lbs?
I know there have been plenty of NFL running backs who've historically came from smaller schools but another concern I have outside of his weight @ only 185 lbs is the fact that he's never gone up against NFL defensive animals. During a real game. I can't even tell you how he performed against an Alabama, LSU, FSU, Ohio State, Miami and/or a Gators led defense. As a division ll product I can't even tell you who the best college defense he played up against is... Johnson C. Smith? Winston-Salem St? Livingstone? Elizabeth City State? Bowie St? Lincoln? Virginia Union? Fayetteville State? West Georgia? Chowan? Who? Has his work cut out for him in short....
Nice write up from yesterday: https://nypost.com/2018/08/05/jets-cant-get-over-their-emerging-ferrari-running-back/
Remember two seasons ago this guy was going to snap like a twig and barely make the field due to injuries because he was so thin and underweight... And now we know he is strong enough to compete and in fact is on the verge of a real breakout year, 1000+ yards beckon for Robby imo
I can't believe we kicked this guy outta town, only for him to take a break then join the Saints years later. Jets should've been on the phone the minute he wanted to coach again.
My guess is that Cannon will make the team as a return specialist as the Jets are really lacking in that area. He has the speed for it.
