Yeah, the man actually admitted during an interview on the FAN that he would love to have an all-Hispanic team. Omar's a douche.
The simple name "Halladay" has now been misspelled three different ways in this thread. That is all. Carry on.
He's a lousy General Manager, but the relentlessly stupid Hispanic bellyaching practically undercuts the argument at this point. There's been absolutely nothing to suggest that the organization favors Hispanic players over white guys, black guys, or Asian ones. He's certainly had an emphasis on courting Hispanic fans and improving scouting/signings in Latin America, but you'd have to be a fucking idiot to not do that in this era. I suppose this interview about fielding an all-Hispanic team was on right before you saw ESPN confirm that 2003 steroid list, right? You're full of shit. Again and forever.
All they care about are appearances. Like, they have a high payroll so they must be serious about winning. It's not they could throw a 50M payroll out there in New York and still be able to jerk off over their great new Dodgers stadium.
Could you elaborate here? I think they make an attempt to win, they're just really bad at it. They didn't have to make the Santana trade, for instance. I don't see why they would go to all this trouble and then not care how the team does.
granted, you aren't trying to win this season if you trade Santana. but, hypothetical best case scenario, you get 3 A prospects who turn into MLB studs 3 years down the line, and that was your goal, and they improve your team in 3 years more than having Santana has for the 3 years in between, then clearly you are trying to win. could that happen? sure, and that is the only way you make that trade -- 3 sure fire prospects. is that likely to happen? probably not, and that is why you don't.
Maybe it's not that they don't care if the team wins or not, but it's definitely not their top priority. How can you explain Omar hanging around for as long as he has? After 2006: This team was a couple outs away from the World Series, so we won't have to make any moves and will be great again next year. After 2007: Get me a top of the line starter and we can win! After 2008: Get me a bullpen and we can win! The Wilpons are more concerned with being able to say that they have the first hispanic GM or black managers than whether or not these guys are actually doing their jobs.
I don't remember Omar ever saying he wanted to create an all-Latin team, but I do know that Anna Benson claimed Minaya was attempting to do just that. Perhaps that's what is being referred to?
Wrong Halladay I meant the one from toronto. My thinking is based on what Arizona did with two aces a few years ago. They had a poor hitting team but in a playoff series they were hard to beat.
I really don't think that's true. It's not that often you see a GM dismissed after almost getting 3 straight playoff appearences; I think Omar should've been fired but I see the argument against. Just because the Wilpons aren't doing what you want them to do doesn't mean they consider the team a personal vanity project; they are trying to win.
Failing in the playoffs is one thing, anything can happen in those series, but with the resources Omar was given not making the playoffs is a failure. If your boss at work asked you what you needed to do your job, then got you all those things, and you still didn't do your job how long do you think you would keep it? We're in year 3 of that with Omar.
