The Russians have decided to use our greatest strength against tyranny - freedom of speech - to undermine our ability to remain a free society. Former spy Sergei Skripal is in critical shape after a poison assassination attempt in the UK. The Russians first traded him to Britain in a spy swap and now they're trying to assassinate him. Or have already succeeded. No honor among thieves I guess.
Another thing Trump shares with Putin is they both hate the free press. In Russia, the free press has been replaced with Putin press. If you overstep the boundary in Russia as a journalist, Putin either imprisons you or kills you. Trump envies this but can't do it in the USA, so he just attacks it as "fake news". But the idea is the same. It's the hallmark of any dictator really, attack the news organizations for printing the truth about you, and hope to replace them with state sponsored propaganda.

I think the Skripal hit was a message to deter future spies from betraying Russia. Doesn't even matter if they trade you, unless you're under a witness protection program somewhere out in Idaho, if they want you dead they're going to kill you. This latest guy wasn't a former spy or a traitor. He was just someone who Putin found dangerous, so he had him killed. Russia will deny everything of course and try to blame someone else for the hit. It's easy for them to do so in the nerve agent attack, where only a very few limited elite could have gotten access to the chemicals, so this old school hit will be easy.
