Thought it was interesting to see how much more the Jets paid for their QB than the Bills and Cardinals paid for theirs. It's clear they paid a premium for Darnold. Hopefully he turns out to be the best QB of the crop because his draft price certainly was the most expensive. Cost to get Darnold: 6th overall pick 37 49 2019 2nd round pick Cost to get Allen: 12 53 56 Cost to get Rosen: 15 79 152
They paid a premium because there were more unknowns when they made the trade. By making the trade they removed a lot of the uncertainty and ensured they would get an elite QB prospect and that teams like Buffalo and Arizona didn't beat them to the punch.
We paid more for a Porsche than the Bills paid for a Ford F-150 and and the Cardinals paid for a Fiat (Fix It Again Tony). What’s your point.
Think of the return on investment though, if he turns out to be a FQB, that’s ten years of drafts that the jets don’t have to trade away picks and can continue to address other areas. It’s only a lot if he doesn’t pan out. Honestly it’s water under the bridge at this point, it’s done, we have to move on from this, there’s nothing to be gained by the clarity of hindsight and how it developed for other teams.
You need to include the fact that we received Jermaine Kearse as part of the compensation for Sheldon, which was parlayed into the Darnold deal.
i always thought that they moved up BEFORE the draft because it would cost more on draft day, and i have to assume to move up to 3 it would have. i didnt think it was a terribly steep price at the time. i think its a little steep now looking at how things turned out but thats hindsight.
Bah humbug.. Yah gets what's ya pay for: Allen >>>>>>>>to Buff FEH Rosen >>>>>Better than FEH but a lot riskier than Sam Sam>>>>>Jets NOT CHEAP but projected BEST QB in draft by all AND prob worth it
Easier to swallow if we kept one of our 2nd rd picks. I think everyone would be feeling better if we had another player. Then again if we did have our picks probably would have just drafted safeties and D line men anyway.
Would anyone even shrug at this trade had we made it with Cleveland for the number one pick to Darnold?
I don't disagree that the Jets paid a premium but let's do the accounting correctly. The Jets swapped firsts with the Colts. In the process they gave their natural second round picks in 2018 (#35) and the 2019 pick. They also gave up their Seahawks second, which was Richardson. All accounted for, selecting S. Darnold cost the following: Q. Nelson D. Leonard K. Turay Plus the 2019 second round pick. Pretty fair deal, when considering those factors. About the argument that the Jets could have made the move on draft night, I strongly disagree. The Jets absorbed a tremendous risk making their move early. They could have been picking the third best QB in the draft. If they didn't make the move earlier and waited till draft night, it would have cost more. Certainty commands a higher premium than risk. While we're doing some accounting for premiums paid, didn't the Bills make a ton of moves to get to 7? Help me out here. Didn't they giving up their 2017 first to get the Chiefs 2018 first? Like trading their best lineman to swap that 1st round pick with Cinci's? And then, after all that, didn't they give up the twos? Setting aside the prior moves, selecting J. Allen cost the following: V. Vea MJ. Stewart D. Dawson Also a fair deal for moving up. The pick itself, well... I mean, the Bills have a type. EJ Manuel, C. Jones, N. Peterman -- it seems like the franchise prefers size over football skills. So maybe they got their guy? In any event, neither premium is ridiculous. No one got fleeced like the Redskins with the Griffin pick. Hell, neither the Jets nor the Jets paid as much as the Eagles to get Wentz. No tears here.
We did better than they Rams and Eagles did for Goff and Wentz and they turned out fine. No issues with this trade. If you dont move up to get the QB you’ll maybe never get him. We still have our #1 next year. This was a victory. Now we should likely stop making stupid deals like the one we made for the penalty machine corner we got from San Francisco that we could’ve picked up on waivers.
Money post, man! Hilarious and true. People complaining about trading up don't realize how wise of a move it was. First of all: They ended up with Sam Darnold, so nothing else really matters to me. But for discussion purposes, if the Jets waited until yesterday who knows what they would have had to give up? No one thought Darnold was dropping to #3. When he did, the price to get him would have been huge by the Colts. The Jets would have had competition in the Bills, Cardinals, Broncos, and anyone else who wanted Darnold. A bidding war would have started and no doubt the Jets would have lost their 1st Round Pick in 2019, assuming they got Darnold at all. The only fans who could be slightly upset are fans who wanted Allen or Rosen at #6. Hindsight is 20/20 though. Jets fans should be ecstatic with the result.
If the Colts were still at 3 with Darnold on the board they may have gotten an all time load of picks.
