The guy is a genetic freak. While NT isn't the biggest need, depending on how the board falls, there could be worse picks made. If, for whatever reason, we slide back a few spots, he makes even more sense.
He's definitely a great prospect and the Jets could use an upgrade at NT, but if Mac trades back and takes him rather than taking a QB or adding someone who could improve the offense, he deserves to be fired as soon as the pick is made and not even allowed to finish the draft. Enough with the damn defense! The offense needs to get some #1 picks on it. How many #1 picks have the Jets used on defense over the last 10 years, and their D still isn't elite.
If we land Cousins, circumstances are very different. Even if we don't, we shouldn't box ourselves into taking the 4th best QB if the draft board fell that way.
If we land Cousins, then that changes things to a extent. The offense would still need a lot. The OL needs upgrading: Carpenter is not a good fit for a zone-blocking scheme. He needs to be replaced. We need two centers. RT could be upgraded. We need a future LT or at least a capable backup. We need a starting RB. We need a #1 WR. If we don't re-sign ASJ, we need a TE. Some of that can and should be done in FA, but the fact remains that in the draft, the Jets have pretty much ignored the offense, at least in terms of #1 draft picks for all but one of the last 10 years. In case you've forgotten, here's a run down of the last 10 Jets drafts in terms of the 1st two picks. 2017 1. Jamal Adams - D 2. Marcus Maye - D 2016 1. Darron Lee - D 2. Christian Hackenberg - O 2015 1. Leonard Williams - D 2. Devin Smith - O 2014 1. Calvin Pryor - D 2. Jace Amaro - O 2013 1. Dee Milliner - D 2. Sheldon Richardson - D 2012 1. Quinton Coples - D 2. Stephen Hill - O 2011 1. Muhammad Wilkerson - D 2. Kenrick Ellis - D 2010 1. Kyle Wilson - D 2. Vlad Ducasse - O 2009 1.Mark Sanchez - O 2. Shonn Greene - O 2008 1. Vernon Gholston - D 2. Dustin Keller - O 1 out of 10 first round picks and 7 out of 10 2nd round picks. I'll admit that I had forgotten that most of the 2nd round draft picks were offensive players, but only 2 of those 7 are still on the team (Hack and Devin Smith), and neither may be after this season. Maye is the only defensive 2nd round pick still on the team. What a black hole the 2nd round has been.
Oh dear god no. He will be a good NT for sure, but drafting any pure NT that high is foolish at best. It’s just not a premium game changing position. It’s the same problem with Nelson at guard. While he’s a great prospect, the position is not as valuable as one of the premium positions. On offense you want a left tackle or QB, on defense a pass rusher or CB. If nothing in those qualifies as a top ten talent you then look to other positions, but NT and guard are both way down the list value wise. Mid to late first? Sure .. top ten? No thanks
This partly explains why the Jets haven't made the playoffs since 2010. Mac needs to hit a grand slam in this draft like the Saints did last year. If that means getting our long awaited FQB, all the better.
You can say that's the case for any team. One great or two consecutive good drafts typically catapult teams to playoff legitimacy within a couple of years.
Man, outside of Greene and Keller, both somewhat, our O picks have really sucked! Mulligan to Smith so far due to injury though...
I really like Vea. I think he will be the first interior defensive lineman off the board. I can see him possibly going in the top 15.
