It’s such a shame when the fans and players aren’t in sync. Someone get the players on board with losing.
Enjoyable if you’re used to losing Which we all are Not enjoyable to me though because there is no plan no path no goal
We started Josh Fucking McCown at QB and people are whining that we weren’t trying to tank? Blame Josh McCown for trying to extend his NFL career and not just taking his one year payday and playing for drafting a QB.
What a great post. When we signed McCown this was supposed to be the ultimate signal and a guarantee of an 0-16 season! Bravo for this one.
There are two things that were clear about Josh McCown on the day we signed him: 1. He was at least in-the-conversation as the best QB they had available to them in free agency (or via trade), and 2. He would never be our quarterback when the team was finally Super Bowl caliber. That is not indicative of a signing with the intention to tank. Now if they had come out and said, "McCown is here as a mentor/tutor. We will start one or both of the two kids all season," that would be different. But that's not what happened.
Ken Stabler: Round 2 (Won SB) Drew Brees: Round 3 (Won SB) Dan Fouts: Round 3 (Never played in SB) Kurt Warner: Never drafted (Won SB) Joe Montana: Round 3 (Won SB) Russell Wilson: Round 3 (Won SB) Tom Brady: Round 5 (Won SB) Boomer Easiason: Round 2 (Played in SB) Ron Jaworski: Round 2 (Played in SB) Ken Anderson: Round 3 (Played in SB) Colin Kaepernick: Round 2 (Played in SB) Brad Johnson: Round 9 (Won SB) Chris Chandler: Round 3 (Played in SB) Brett Favre: Round 2 (Won SB) Mark Rypien: Round 6 (Won SB) Jeff Hostetler: Round 3 (Won SB) Joe Theismann: Round 4 (Won SB) I'll not include Unitas, Staubach, Starr.
Matt threw an 85 yard td to Wesley Walker to win that game vs the Orange Crush, he didn't replace Turd he was the starter
McCown being the best available QB in no way equates to the expectation that he was a good QB. He is a career losing QB having another losing year. Nothing about McCown’s resume indicates that they expected to win by signing him.
I never said they expected to win. I said his signing (and subsequent elevation to "starter") indicated they did not intend to tank.
The reality is despite McCown having a career year the Jets have won 2 games I didn't expect them to win, the Jags game which came the week after they were in London and the KC game. 2 unexpected wins from a career year from a career back up. I can't bitch too badly about the results and even with that most expected Clev, SF and Chicago to be worse than the Jets. The only real surprise other than those teams is the Giants. If we knew Luck would be out all year I bet everyone would expect them to be as bad or worse than the Jets. So other than the Giants nothing has really changed on my view of where the Jets would be this year draft wise. Yes TB, Den and Hou are currently ahead of the Jets for draft slot but that can and I think will change and all it would take is 1 more win by TB and Den. All said even with 5 wins they are pretty much where I expected them to be for draft slot and they are at least watchable this year which I didn't expect. They've had 2 blowout losses, Oak and Den 13 games in, for a rebuilding year that's not bad at all. I just hope Woody, Chris etc. see that toilet isn't the guy to lead this team going forward. Toilet is still incompetent in year 3, their surprisingly competitive year isn't due to Toilet its despite him.
What does it mean to tank other than not putting an effort into fielding a winning team? And if they didn’t expect a career losing QB to win, then they weren’t putting an effort into winning, and were thus tanking.
You can try your best to field the best possible team and still know you have no chance at winning. They call the owners and general managers of these teams "imbeciles" when they don't have a quarterback. The worst thing you can be in the NFL is 6-10 with no quarterback.
The worst thing you can be is without a quarterback regardless of whether you're 6-10 or 2-14. Most teams with good QBs did not get those QBs by tanking.
