You prevent access by holding the people responsible for letting the gun fall into the wrong hands. Harshly. Find the person who let the 17 year old get that pistol and charge him as an accessory to murder. Hold people accountable for their actions amd make the consequences so severe the risk won’t be worth the profit. It worked with drunk driving, it’s working with cell phone use while driving, it punsishes the law breakers without affecting the majority.

Look up the history of gun control in Germany.

It was when guns were reinstated that the Brown Shirts were enabled because armed parades represented more force than any civil authority could muster against them.

Yes, that'd be a great start. Unfortunately, every time we try to hold a retailer responsible, they get off scot free. If half your guns sold are used in crimes within one year of purchase, maybe it's time to investigate because that doesn't happen by accident.

Sounds like a prosecution problem then.

Gun retailers have a lot of legislative protections.

The disarmament of the German Jews was a post-facto event. German Jews were already out numbered and outgunned and faced with only the choice of flight to save themselves. The same would be true for any group of Americans whom the government chose to focus on and persecute. Once the state or dominant faction if the state is too weak has decided to go after somebody there is no recourse gained by the private ownership of any weapons that might be attainable.

The answer is to have a strong state supported by representative government. The only weapon that can be successfully used against that state is the vote. It's a fantasy to suggest that any type of armed resistance or insurrection is going to succeed against the modern state. It is possible to overthrow the government by economic and political means, as happened all across the Arab Spring but you will never overthrow it by force.

The PLCAA enacted by Bush preventing sellers from being held liable except under VERY certain circumstances that are hard to prove.

Gun lobbyists have ensured no legislation will pass that means oversight for dealers. This is nothing new.

It goes one step further. The victims of the Colorado theatre shooting sued the shop that sold the ammunition and got stuck paying the shop’s legal bill. Absolutely absurd.

Good. That's the price to pay for filing an absurd lawsuit. The ammo seller had nothing to do with the madman killing innocent people. But of course, this is America... let's sue whoever we can.

There is no regulation on selling ammo other than age. Why should the ammo seller be libel?

When you sell a product which was invented with the sole purpose to maim and kill, and it’s used to main and kill, why should you be absolved of any responsibility? Paying damages, or getting insurance to protect against possible damages, should simply be the cost of doing business when you choose to sell a product which purpose is to maim and kill.

Costs may go up, but that’s simply the market regulating the costs to provide as much protection as reasonably possible to the public.

It isn’t as if ammunition and gun sellers are forced into that business and would be victims of any lawsuits. These people choose to do it. Well, the risk of getting sued should simply be assumed.

Do you hold car manufacturers responsible for high speed wrecks?
Just wondering how far we stretch this.

When you shoot someone, you have used the gun and ammunition correctly as it is designed. When a car is used to injure someone it is being misused, either by reckless or careless operation or intentionally misused.

Logical comparisons are not dictated by finding similarities but by having an absence of meaningful differences. Using a gun as it is intended to be used is wholly different than misusing a car beyond its intended use.

Guns are made to shoot projectiles at a target. It is illegal to make that target a person without just cause. Nothing about a gun makes it required to kill something in order to use it properly . Ammo sellers and makers are just as libel for someone’s murder as car makers and dealers are for someone’s death by high speed crash. The user chose to use the product in a way that is illegal on their own volition. If we are going to open this box no one will ever be responsible for any of their actions. What’s next? Sue bic for arson cases?
