Your last sentence is true, but then if Mac had taken Watson instead of Adams, Watson proved to be nothing special and Adams played very well elsewhere, then some would have griped about that as well. With regards to Watson's impressive resume, the following collegiate QBs had very impressive resumes as well, with playing big in big games, bowl victories, national championships (facts) and look at how their NFL careers went or have gone so far. 2014 Marcus Mariota - 304 Cmp, 445 Att, 4,454 Yds, 42 TDs, 4 Ints; overall 779 Cmp, 1167 Att, 66.8%, 10,796 Yds, 105 TDs, 14 Ints, 171.8 Rtg 2013 Jameis Winston - 257 Cmp, 384 Att, 4,057 Yds, 40 TDs, 10 Ints; 2012 Johnny Manziel - 295 Cmp, 434 Att, 3,706 Yds, 26 TDs, 9 Ints; 2011 Robert Griffin, III - 291 Cmp, 402 Att, 4,293 Yds, 37 TDs, 6 Ints; 2010 Cam Newton - 185 Cmp, 280 Att, 2,854 Yds, 30 TDs, 7 Ints; 2008 Sam Bradford - 328 Cmp, 423 Att, 4,720 Yds, 50 TDs, 8 Ints; 2007 Tim Tebow - 234 Cmp, 350 Att, 3,286 Yds, 32 TDs, 6 Ints; 2006 Troy Smith - 203 Cmp, 311 Att, 2,542 Yds, 30 TDs, 6 Ints; 2004 Matt Leinart - 269 Cmp, 412 Att, 3,322 Yds, 33 TDs, 6 Ints; 2003 Jason White - 278 Cmp, 451 Att, 3,846 Yds, 40 TDs, 10 Ints; 2002 Carson Palmer - 309 Cmp, 489 Att, 3,942 Yds, 33 TDs, 10 Ints; 2001 Eric Crouch - 105 Cmp, 189 Att, 1,510 Yds, 7 TDs, 10 Ints; 2000 Chris Weinke - 266 Cmp, 431 Att, 4,167 Yds, 33 TDs, 11 Ints; 1996 Danny Wuerffel - 207 Cmp, 360 Att, 3,625 Yds, 39 Tds, 13 Ints; 1992 Gino Torretta - 228 Cmp, 402 Att, 3,060 Yds, 19 TDs, 7 Ints; 1990 Ty Detmer - 361Cmp, 562 Att, 5,188 Yds, 41 TDs, 28 Ints; 1989 Andre Ware - 365 Cmp, 578 Att, 4,699 Yds, 46 TDs, 15 Ints;
I agree with this. What's your point? I never said other teams don't suck at drafting. I just said, as an example of why picking a QB no matter what is a dumb idea, that the Geno pick was terrible and helped the Jets in no way whatsoever. How does this post refute that?
But how many teams have shit the bed on ALL their 2nd round picks for 10 years straight??? *Fingers crossed for Maye. I already got the jersey....*
i'm not refuting anything nor disagreeing with you. Just saying all teams make shitty picks and all teams fans bitch about. we are no different, worse or better then any other team in regards to this
LMAO i wouldn't say completely shit the bed for 10 years. maye is looking great. hack is too soon to tell but not looking good, smith was injury prone and never had a real shot due to that, amaro was a bust, geno was a bust, hill was a bust, ducasse was a bust, harris was a great pick. we also had a couple of years with no 2nd round pick
On a somewhat unrelated but very annoying tidbit of news, Rex Ryan has gone on record to admit Sanchez was never going to be a FQB and his bone head mistakes in the red zone made him a liability. He further states Geno was not given any talent from Idzyk to help him develop and he didn't help himself either. So we basically pissed away 5 years patching up draft mistakes with over the hill dinosaurs, poor management and dreadful Coaching. Literally we went from the Idzyk/Ryan era of "can't draft thus we can't win" to the Mac/Bowles you can draft them but I don't have to play them routine with similar success. No QB on site. We better find ourselves a QB guru before we draft the next QB. I'm getting tired of this perpetual BS dynasty of having no hope whatsoever to be a contender behind a QB we can be proud off. Sorry for venting
Hindsight is always 20/20. Yeah given a do-over I would take Watson over Adams, but there's a reason other teams avoided drafting him early. It wasn't just the Jets that passed on him.
Yes, sorry. Desean Jackson leaked out of my brain there. I did a similar thing in a different post...lotta damaged brain cells, and lazy editing too. Thanks for clarifying
This is how the world renown GEms on this board operate, without Hindsight they'd all be banned from TGG
Maybe, but I can only speak for myself. I would not gripe if the Jets, in desperate need of a QB, had taken a QB instead of Adams and that QB turned out to be a bust even if Adams became an all-pro. And that's because I view the QB position as essential to winning football. Furthermore to set the record straight, yes, I would have taken Watson over Adams and everyone knows that, but people should not be griping about not taking Watson. It's far too early to tell if he'll be any good. But it's also too early to tell about Adams. Against Miami, he made some mistakes. In fact, so far, I think Maye has played better.
To me, any team that’s in a “QB competition” (with some exceptions) is going to fail even before the season starts. We recently seem to not know who our staring QB is every other year. We will likely have this dilemma again next season. How do we even make progress if the offense doesn’t even know or have rapport with their QB? I just feel we’re going down the same path as during the Rex days where we have these great defensive guys on paper with no offense to speak of.
You left a few big ones out 2007 JaMarcus Russell 2002 David Carr 1999 Akili Smith and Tim Couch 1998 Ryan Leaf I don't know if I would put Carson Palmer into this underwhelming list though. He hasn't won the big game, but he's had over a decade and a half being a pretty decent NFL QB. I think he can retire and sleep well knowing how his career turned out. There really hasn't been a "can't miss" QB prospect since Andrew Luck, and he's not exactly been the Young to Manning's Montana either. College, it seems, has become more run-happy, and the majority of the college QBs, even the top prospects, are more like running backs who can pass rather than traditional QBs. At the same time, all the new rules and the general style of play of the NFL is making the running game almost obsolete. As a result, it's become harder and harder to find college QB who are truly ready for the pro game.
You're right. They just don't teach the QB position the same way anymore and the NFL hasn't caught up with that yet.
I was thinking that maybe the problem is that the NFL isn't adapting to the types of QBs they're producing in college. The standard argument is that the pro game is simply much quicker, and more complicated, but maybe that's not entirely the reason. Maybe the pros need to adjust their playbooks to fit the QB, rather than just trying to force fit the QB? Certainly the pro game IS faster, and even the weaker teams have more talent on them that almost all college teams so a rookie does need to learn how to deal with that, but maybe the HC/OC could help the transition by adapting more plays that fit what the QB is used to, assuming he's a guy they figure will be their future FQB. When there's such a long list of failures, and mediocrity, I think the NFL needs to look at their expectations and methods.
I don't know what list you're referring to, but I used the actual Heisman Trophy Winners. In 1998, it has Ricky Williams winning the Heisman. In 1999 Ron Dayne won the Heisman. In 2002 Carson Palmer won the Heisman. I only mentioned the QBs who had won the Heisman Trophy, so Russell, Carr, Smith, Couch and Leaf don't belong on the list I posted. With regards to Carson Palmer, to be fair, I included all of the QBs who had won the Heisman since 1989, even if they had been decent. It wasn't just a list of QBs who have done little in the NFL. That said, Palmer hasn't done that much in the NFL. Neither has Mariota.
Listing criteria for your list after the fact does not make you right. Your original list was supposedly "the following collegiate QBs had very impressive resumes as well, with playing big in big games, bowl victories, national championships (facts)"
The same Steven A Smith who once thought you can kick a field goal on third down and if you miss it you can re kick it on fourth down. lol
