Square vs round comes down to style of pie.Thicker crust ala sicilian or greek you want square cut. Neapolitan or any thin crust is what is best round. In Italy most of the pizza is square - or to be more specific rectangular. They sell it by weight and they will cut it to the size of your liking. In 5 trips all close to 2 weeks, I have had a round pizza once, It was at a sit down place outside of Pompeii. In the words of Neil Pearl - “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice”. - I will say that I don’t give a fuck about the shape - good pizza is good pizza
The only pizza I've had in Italy was in a little shop in a side alley in the Vatican City. It was rectangular, and trash. If I wasn't so hungry I would have slapped it upside a gypsies face.
i had "pizza" in Naples a long time ago. it was a hard cooked flatbread with a couple of tomatoes, a chunk of cheese and an egg cooked on it. i admit that it tasted great with the seasonings but it wasn't pizza like you would think. the pizza you are talking about is almost entirely American at this point and i wouldn't have it any other way

I might change my vote,,,,after thinking about this all night and losing sleep,,,,,,,there are some places that I go for for round slices and others ( see L n B Spumoni Garden in Brooklyn ) where its strictly square,,,,,,now there are other places such as Lennys on 86th street ( of Saturday Night Fever fame ) where its strictly a Grandmas slice but this falls into a gray area as the grandmas is square and delicious ,,,,but I stray
