Normally I wouldn't make a big deal about something like this, and it's still not even a BIG deal, but I find it interesting. He was a very solid player for us and was set to make just over $3 mil this season... a good price for a solid player in a year where you have a ton of money. Cap savings is $0. A potential and likely overthink here but... could this be a precursor to drafting Quinnen Williams?
I liked Pennel but maybe he was more of a Bowles guy. It looks like at least FA will be trench heavy w moves made on both OL & DL. I hope this means Grady Jarrett not Quinnon Williams. He has high bust potential
Cap savings is $1,666,666 according to Over the Cap. https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/new-york-jets/
I read that as the amount of dead money = the amount of cap savings, my bad. Also Terrence Brooks is a goner which opens up another $2ish mil. Edit: Now I'm confusing myself... maybe I was right. It looks like the dead cap and cap savings cancel each other out on the Pennel cut. Brooks opens up $1.5 mil after his dead cap number. I think. Who knows, who cares really. It's pennies in today's NFL.
No the dead money is the same amount as the cap savings. We will save 1.6 and carry 1.6 in dead money, had he played this year the cost to the cap would have been the 3.3 ... its basically a 50/50 split on savings and dead money.
His stats look worse than the previous season, but that 17 season he made 2/3 huge fouls in consecutive weeks, fucking us over from good positions, can't remember 2 but one of them was his late hit on cheater Brady for a 15 yard penalty to get them out of the shit, sure he did the same the previous week to another QB but hey sketchy memory banks lol He wasn't very popular in the match threads around that time, not overly sad to see him leave, surely there is better out there for us?
I read something Daryl Slater from NJ.com posted and it effed me all up. Don't know why I got confused but yes either way, we opened up about $3.5 mil between the two moves. Although it seems odd that you'd release the guy who played the most ST snaps on a team that had a great ST unit.
The Jets can still vie for his services on the free agent market and possibly save some money, right?
Is he going to sign for less than 1.6M? That's all they saved by cutting him. I can't see them getting any decent veteran short ydg NT for less than that. Doesn't feel like a good move to me. Maybe Mac's forcing Shepard and Fatukasi onto the field?
Right now he's the devil you know, nothing more. Free agency will be interesting and the new staff will be looking for guys who fit their mold. More of what kind of guys they are than pigeon-holing them into a scheme.
Maybe the thought is Shepard will be a better 4-3 interior guy? Logic dictates he will but it's not like he exactly inspired a ton of confidence.
Totally agree on Jarrett over Q. Williams. Mike MacCagnan will probably take a DT in round one though , and then a bunch of DBs and WRs later like he did in 2017. He wouldn't draft a decent offensive lineman to save his job.
Shepard looked a little slow to me, so maybe the nose in a 4-3, which Pennel could also play. I don't see either guy at 3 tech though. Fatusaki could be interesting, as I could see him playing a number of interior line techniques if he grows as a player. Hopefully Williams can coach these young guys up. We still have McLendon for time being as well.
McLendon is a 33 year old UFA, I feel like you can pretty much guarantee he's a goner unfortunately. He's played very well and has earned himself a decent contract and I'm not sure we're in the position to give it to him given the circumstances. Gregg Williams is going to be key here. Can he/his system unlock potential in guys like Leonard Williams and Shepard?
