We need shrewd signings in FA...I do not want to see this team sign pricey veterans who's best days are behind them. Whatever FA we sign had better be young guys with their best football ahead of them. Trim the roster of guys like Marshall, Gilchrist, Revis and get younger.
When has this ever happened? The only guys they can get are over the hill, and the drastically overpay , that's been that way for ever, and its nit changing now, team is extremely desperate, look out.
Why oh why is Revis still on the roster?. I would have bet even money he would have been the first to go. I shall miss Mangold dearly. He was a true warrior, and when healthy, still a contributor. He was released for obvious salary cap issues and that made sense. Revis on the other hand was totally ineffective and wasted money last year. why is he not leading the unemployed parade? Pull the plug and move on Mac.
Hopefully the Jets are just exploring any options they may have to recoup his salary due to his legal issues. Once cut, there is no recouping any of the $6 million he is due, other than deducting any salary he is signed for by another team. It doesn't appear that there are any legal grounds to void his contract, but the franchise must explore all options before releasing him.
Once all cuts are complete I'd expect some where in the neighborhood of 40 - 50 million in cap space. Still not alot of money considering how many players will need to be replaced.
I think the Jets are comfortable with the play of many of last season's understudies enough that their replacements are already on the roster. Young/er depth is going to be added with an occasional vet who they can sign on a team friendly contract. That money being freed will not necessarily all be spent this offseason.
I said this in the Mangold thread, (not that it deserves to be there) The Jets can't cut Revis until March 9th. Be patient.

Besides the fact that Woody is our clueless owner and Bowels is our clueless coach------------> rebuilding should begin in year 1 not year 3 ! Better late than never ? We have no LT or center under contract. Our depth chart as of now consist of Carpenter, Winters, Shell and Brent Qvale. There has to be some FA signings, resigning some of our own like Johnson and Ijalana , and a couple of FAs mixed in. The draft class is very weak this year for O line. I hope some money is rolled over to next year,but most of it will have to be spent just to field a roster.
And now they are in hurry up mode to trade Richardon because the idiot overpaid Wilkerson so much that he is untradeable. Now our best DL will be given away for nothing.
Bad contracts given out, overpaying old aging players, not getting production form cheap players (aka rookies making an impact on rookie deals) not drafting well, not finding good mid tier FAs, good players having bad years (wilkerson), injuries it all adds up
Not one guy is over 10 million dollars, when it comes time for the Pats to pay someone other than Brady, he will be traded for additional picks or be released.
That's not [quite] true. Solder and McQuarty are both above 10M mark. But other than that - the overall cap structure is very solid. He doesn't need premier talent to run his system after all. [His 30M defense payroll says so. His spending on offense is on par with other franchises at 69M.]
I would love to hear news that Woody has brought in an "overseer" to make final decisions while he's off doing the Donald's business. If the focus could be shifted to making football decisions instead of business decisions for just 2-3 years it could turn this organization around. FULL commitment to team success, no more half measures based on financial politics.
