Are we also going t go back and argue balls and and strikes while Glavine and Maddux go to the HOF? Those strike zones weren't a singular call, it was an outside the definition career. That's a facile argument
balls and strikes are not black and white, you can complain every single game about balls and strikes. On this particualr play chalk flew up, an ump was standing not far away watching it and he blew it. Chalk flying up is what makes it one of the worst calls of all time, if there wasn't chalk and it was fair I could give the ump a pass.
Besides it doesn't matter. Dickey will go no no or perfect this year, and the Mets will set a pitching record for most one or less hit games in a ingle season. And dickey will win the Cy Young. Phil Niekro and Charlie Hough pitched till they were going on 50. 30 years ago.both ended .500or better Dickey has got a shot to go long and dominant.
I hope Dickey pitches one(as long as it isn't Sunday Night). he comes across as a good guy so he's easy to root for- same w/ Santana. It would be nice to see the Mets remain in the race, I'm not sure that will happen but we'll see.
Oh... you can give the ump a pass regardless of what MLB does. When did you become MLB Commish. The Jeffrey Maier play was 10x's worse then this but you say "we don't know if Tarrasco would have caught the ball" well he should have but we'll never know because some snot nosed punk kid interfered with the play just like we'll never know if the ump saw chalk.
The Maier play was not worse b/c A)we still don't know if he catchges it or not and B)the setries is likely 1-1 headed back to baltimore regardless of that play. Again, if they call jeter out and the yanks lose that game then Mariano isn't pitching 2 innings and is available for Game 2 where Bal scored 3 runs in the 7th and 8th innings to win 5-3. so yes it was worse b/c this was an obvious call and the difference in history.
It was a terrible call and the ball may have been caught. The Beltran bad call was the difference in hisotry, the maier play was the difference in knowing who Jeffrey maier was-the yanks still go on to win the WS w/ or w/ that play.
You don't know that as fact, maybe they do, maybe they don't. Maybe teh Orioles were so mentally out of it after that call they checked out mentally. We don't know for fact they win anything.
It's not a fact unlike the beltran play actually being a hit. We have no idea how the maier play ends up. The Orioles were so mentally out of it after that play that they won game 2. Come on Miano.
lolz @ being able to speculate on an entire series based off one one play. For somebody who strictly goes on facts
So you don't think if rivera is available Game 2 that makes a difference? so you think baltimore couldn't recover from the blown call in game 1 even though they won game 2 and headed home for 3 games tied at 1?
We also have no idea if the sun will rise tomorrow, but we can make a pretty damned good guess. And regardless, for the sake of this comparison with Maier, the issue shouldn't be whether or not the ball would have been caught. The issue is whether or not there was fan interference, which is an out according to the rules. And he clearly reached into the field of play. Maier leaning over the fence should have been a much easier call to make than the fair/foul call.
