Just realized Macc signed Ijalana to a two year 11 million dollar contract. How many snaps did he play on the o-line week 1.....0
He played 2 on special teams....Macc continues to give out horrible free agent contracts IMO.

    I disagree.

Ijalana is a solid pro. He may not be great, but he can play either LT or RT, and at the time, the Jets didn't have another OL on the roster who could play LT. There was no guarantee that the Jets were going to be able to sign a FA LT who was any better, and with it being a lousy draft for LTs, what was Mac supposed to do? He had to have insurance at the LT spot, and because of the importance of the position, those players don't come cheap.

Yea but he didn't play a snap, 5.5 mil for a backup is steep but I'm not sure what the market value is for the position given a bad oline class and it being a premium position.

Good point. While I'm not sure I would want Mac hiring the next HC or handling the all-important 2018 draft, there are no guarantees that a rookie GM would do any better. In all likelihood, he'd have no relationship with our Scouting and Personnel Depts. and would have little time to prepare for FA and the draft, just as Mac did in 2015, and for which he has been so greatly criticized. Do we want to repeat history and have a rookie GM making the decisions to fix the team in 2018?

It would be one thing if Woody knew enough to hire someone who would focus on fixing the offense and OL and who had a solid background in scouting and personnel, but Woody's just as likely to hire another bean counter as GM.

If we could hire Dorsey as GM or as Team President and give him complete control, I'd be all for that. I don't see how that could happen without firing Mac first, however, as it would inevitably get out and re-create the circus here, and there are no guarantees that Dorsey would take the job.

I imagine that most of us despised Schottenheimer and couldn't wait to get rid of him. He deserved firing, and we didn't think it would be possible to find anyone worse, yet the Jets, in their inimitable way, hired Tony Sparano, and then Marty Mornhinweg and both were worse or at least equally as bad.

He's insurance in case Beachum gets hurt or struggles horribly or if neither Shell nor Qvale can get the job done at RT. OL backups generally don't play unless the starter gets injured, so it's completely meaningless that Ijalana didn't play a snap week 1.

So you are paying someone 11 million dollars to do absolutely nothing? Better off taking a flier on a late draft pick for a fraction of the price.

LOL Ijalana solid pro. These lineman are straight ass. Shell looked decent in pass pro on Sunday tho, so he has hope. The run blocking has been horrid.

Which is why we only ran for 38 yards.....but Bowles thinks its best to continue to rely on Matt Forte as RB1 when he looks like hes running through quick sand on every play.

How is Simon a hit? He's on the practice squad. I'm still holding out (faint (delusional)) hope for Petty.

He is doing something. He's the backup. He's insurance. Do you have life insurance, car insurance, insurance on your home or renter's insurance?

Yeah, taking a flyer on a late draft pick to protect your QB's blind side is a real intelligent thing to do. SMH Jets fans.

    Petty is NOT a miss.

Simon is not a hit. He is still a toss up.

Lee is NOT a miss. If anything, he is still a toss up, but he probably is just not being used in the correct way and in the right system.

It looks like Hack is going to be a miss, but it's still too early to say.

Jenkins is already a solid starter.

Burris is still a toss up, but it looks like he is going to be a good pick and solid contributor at a minimum.

Shell is pretty good depth, but most likely not a starting-quality RT, but he was a 5th round pick.

This is where things turn rather hazy. [To me at least.]

    A few unquestionable facts:

    1. You cannot form a roster entirely made of 1st and 2nd rounders. [It will take 11 years to just make the roster.]

    2. Thus developing starters out of 3rd-5th rounders becomes very important.

    3. 6/7th rounders are useless? Not really. They are specifically for special teams.

So, what does this mean? Coaches are really, REALLY important - that's the first thing but, you can't ignore one side of the football as long as the Jets did [simply because BPA dictated otherwise.] This is where I am getting rather frustrated with Mac. He is not addressing the offense at all, in the first few rounds. Developing youngsters is not the Jets coaching staff's forte, so that makes the problem even worse.

I think everyone needs to be calm and we need to stop the "fire everyone" mentality every year as it's not realistic and more importantly it's that type of instability that leads to losing...No one knows yet if Mac is the answer to our long running GM mismanagement problems. We went from win now/sign FA and sacrifice/trade draft picks (Tanny) which worked for a few years until the bottom fell out which is a byproduct of that philosophy, to tear it all down and build up a stash of picks while gutting the roster (Idzik) only to know/find out that while he had the right plan he had no ability to execute most important part...turning draft picks into a talented roster...and that was for a multitude of reasons all of which should have been seen by the mgt. team that hired him.

But now, we at least have the guy who has the right plan (Idzik's old plan) but with the pedigree/SME to suggest he could/should be able to turn draft picks into talent, which is eventually the only way this franchise (not team, but franchise) ever becomes a winner. He gutted the scouting department and by all accounts hired talented folks to guide the talent acquisition process...By definition of his ability to maneuver in the draft, he seems confident in his own ability to make deals and give/get, something Idzik never had (conviction in his own ability to do anything substantive)...seems to have a calming presence, can handle the media and again has a quiet confidence in what he's doing...where that goes, who knows, but so far it's the best i've seen in the last 20 years in order to build this franchise (not team, but franchise) into a winner...long term planning and thinking vs. short term "win this year at all cost" thinking that's put us in this mess.

I really think year one was meant to be a "hold the fort" year as Parcells would say...and they caught a little more success than expected and got trapped into having to build upon that in year two, which i bet was not Mac's plan and ultimately put the Jets in a year 3 rebuild vs. a year 2 rebuild...but you have to adapt and after it fell apart in year 2 he convinced Woody (no small feat) to revert back to the original plan which was build through the draft and be patient...So all in all, i think this thing is going in the right direction if we're patient...Anyone judging this season on wins/losses and subsequently whether we should keep Bowles/Mac is totally missing the point, and at least in some part responsible for why this franchise is so messed up...

I know, that's what losing and being desperate for a winner does, but look at it as sunk costs...the past is a sunk cost, chasing that is like trying to win your money back from the casino at the blackjack table...day after day you're just getting in more debt...If the jets were a brand new franchise, this is the way it would be built and we need to give the guy with the right plan a chance to try and execute it...For reasons other than this year i have severe doubts about Bowles (which i hope he proves me wrong), and do not like the hierarchy Woody has in place where the coach/GM are equal reports which can at some points (like potentially this year) put both employees at odds due to different priorities...But I like Mac (meaning i like his plan and pedigree to pull it off) and am willing to give him a chance...should Bowles not survive this year, which would actually be pretty unfair, my hope would be Mac gets to pick the next coach to provide him with true ownership of whether this thing succeeds or fails.

Totally agree. The question is whether he can turn enough picks into the players the roster needs. It's by no means certain he can but, unlike Idzik, I have some hope he can do it. Enough that I don't want to tear it all down and start again yet anyway.

My only recommendation would be to fire Bowles at the end of year and get a good offensive minded HC that can help to develope the QB position.

I don't believe TB will survive the season if they go 2-14.

I agree. This coaching staff doesn't seem smart. Some of Mac's signings have been head-scratchers. The Hack selection was also very odd. He was a KNOWN PROJECT and should not have been selected in the 2nd round. Picking him wasn't necessarily bad. Picking him in the 2nd round WAS bad.

Mac has drafted 1 lineman just 1 and that's Shell. The line is now in shambles, and when he drafts a QB, how is that line going to look using his current philosophy? McKenzie the guy from the Raiders drafted one each and every year. Ben whatever his name is, SUCKS and is being paid 11M to do nothing.

@Zach pretty much said what I wanted to say.

I think it's a prove it year for everyone really. I don't really like setting win targets, as how they get those wins is probably more important than the numbers at this stage.

Bowles has to not make stupid decisions and show he can prepare a team that plays hard and competes. Mac has to show that he makes enough good picks that he can build a competitive roster through the draft given time. The other coaches have to show that they can, well, coach. And the players have to show they can do it in the NFL or at least have the potential to for the newer ones.

It may be that everyone gets canned, and that might be the right thing to do. I accept a complete tear down might be necessary, but I'm not willing to insist on it as a knee jerk reaction. However at 2-14 its highly likely that Bowles has failed his audition and if that is the case he should be gone along with everyone else that failed to step up.

In general, I agree with the overall tenor of your post, and think you make a lot of excellent points. I have been one of Mac's biggest supporters on this board, long after most posters were saying that he has not done a good job. I agree that Woody is the core problem and he has probably prevented Mac from doing a lot that Mac wanted to do and believed should be done. I like his professionalism, quiet confidence, and his refusal to draft players with poor character and/or violent acts towards women.

That said, I have begun to have a lot of doubts about Mac. I knew it was going to take 3-4 off seasons (at a minimum) to transform the roster. I applaud his not being overly aggressive like Tanny and trading up in the draft. I applaud his looking for value and getting the best players possible. What I don't like is his continuing the trend of the last 10 years or so of putting all the emphasis on the defense and practically ignoring the offense, at least in terms of using #1 and #2 draft picks. He didn't owe Bowles anything. Trying to be fair, maybe Woody instructed him to give Bowles what he wanted, or maybe he knew that in order to have a good working relationship and give their management team the best chance of succeeding (if not keeping his job), that he had to bite the bullet and work to keep Bowles happy. Still, other than the dysfunctional org chart and Woody's known meddling, we have no proof or evidence that the latter is true.

I know that he has made efforts to upgrade the OL, but not nearly enough imo. I think his failing to draft an LT and a C in the 2016 draft was a major mistake. I think his taking Leonard Williams when we already had Mo and Sheldon was a mistake. I'm willing to overlook that one, as it was his first draft, and he may have wanted to trade down and couldn't find a trade partner. His only choice might have been take Williams or reach for a lesser player. I think his taking two safeties this year was a poor decision if not a mistake. While Maye may prove to be a great player, and there's no doubt that Pryor needed to go, there were players that could have helped the offense and/or team a lot. I doubt if Dalvin Cook or Joe Mixon were even on Mac's draft board, and I'd hope that they weren't. Both are supremely talented, but of very poor character and not the types one wants on any team, much less a young, rebuilding team. Mac could have taken Curtis Samuel, a play maker for the offense, taken Sidney Jones or Quincy Wilson at CB, taken a huge target in TE Adam Shaheen, or sought to upgrade the pass rush by taking Tyus Bowser. I didn't think he would take a QB, so it was no surprised that he didn't take Kizer. He could have also perhaps traded down and taken C Ethan Pocic, OG Dion Dawkins, OG Taylor Moton, or RB Alvin Kamara and added an additional pick or picks. In the 3rd round, he traded down instead of taking C Pat Elflein, OG Dan Feeney, or OLB Jordan Willis. I like the Stewart pick, and at least it was something for the offense, but even with trading down, he could have taken LT Antonio Garcia, WR Chris Godwin (a potential #1 WR), or RB Kareem Hunt. One of the things this offense lacks is a power back who can get a yard or two on his own. I don't understand his trading down out of the 4th round and trading down in the 5th to add some additional 6th round picks. In the 4th round, he could have taken Samaje Perine, another RB with power, who has outstanding character and was very good in college. He also could have added OLB Carl Lawson, OG Dorian Johnson, WR Josh Reynolds or RB Joe Williams.

IMO perhaps the worst thing he has done is stack the deck at QB in favor of Hack and the way that he has had Petty treated. His hand in those decisions/actions is very evident. At this point, Petty is the best QB on the team, and he should be starting. He was never given a legitimate or realistic chance of winning the job, however. One would think that Mac would want to see him succeed since Mac traded up for him and he was the first QB he took in the draft. One would also think that he (Mac) would have wanted to upgrade the OL or surround Hack or Petty with more weapons/playmakers in order to help him succeed, but he really didn't.

I haven't totally soured on Mac, I still have some small amount of hope and trust in him, but at this point, unless Lee and a number of his other picks produce at a very high level this year and show signs of major development, I don't think I want him running the 2018 draft. IMO it is just as critical a draft for the Jets as the 2014 draft was, and perhaps more since there will be potentially more top quality QBs in this draft and the Jets could be picking #1 or #2 in every round.

IMO Bowles has proven himself incompetent and in over his head. He is too passive. He doesn't have the team prepared to play each and every week. He's slack and doesn't hold players accountable. He hasn't shown that he can develop young players. He can't manage the game, in-game adjustments or the clock. He is too conservative. In fairness, some of the blame in those areas may belong to Mac. We just don't have enough evidence at this point to know for certain. IMO most importantly, we need a HC with an offensive background who knows how to develop a young QB and help him succeed. Bowles isn't that, so he needs to go.

The problem is that if he is fired, Mac is retained, and Mac hires the new HC (which I would definitely prefer over Woody making the decision), then Mac totally screws up the 2018 FA period and the draft, the Jets would be in the position of having to fire him and the new HC after one season or hire a new GM and insist that he accept the HC that Mac had hired. Neither is a good situation. Worst of all would be the blown opportunity to go a long way in fixing the OL and the offense to restore some balance to the team. Conversely, the idea of a rookie GM being hired in January or February and having little or no time to prepare for FA and the draft, not knowing the scouting and pro personnel people, he couldn't be expected to be any more successful than Mac was in 2015.

As I see it, our only hope is to hire John Dorsey either as Team President and let him make the decision on Mac and Bowles, or talk to Dorsey in secret, get him to accept the GM job once Mac and Bowles are fired and then let him hire the new HC. With Dorsey's experience, eye for talent and background, he wouldn't be unduly hampered with having only a short time to prepare for FA and the draft. He could help create the identity, stability, and culture this franchise needs.
