Giants | W. Allen will not be back Fri, 10 Mar 2006 04:44:31 -0800 Arthur Staple, of Newsday, reports the New York Giants will not bring back CB Will Allen, according to sources. As noted earlier, free agent CB Sam Madison (Dolphins) will be signed to take his place. Giants | Team moving closer to signing Madison Fri, 10 Mar 2006 04:38:39 -0800 The New York Daily News reports the New York Giants are moving closer to signing free agent CB Sam Madison (Dolphins), according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. *Unless the Giants plan on switching to a complete base Cover-2 defense, this is a horrible move. An aging CB who has lost at least 2 steps to be your Left Corner ad cover all the top receivers? He has great instincts and would excel in a zone-Cover-2 defense...But since the G-Men usually run man-to-man, this will make Donnie Abraham look like a track star.
What? You are aware that the Giants are replacing Will Allen and not Darrell Green? This is a stop gap move. Madison has probably lost a step there is no denying that. But he's still a capable vet. And a big improvement over Allen, who for all his physical ability is [for whatever reason] unable to put it all together on the field. And this idea that the Giants are incapable of devising a gameplan to fit a players strengths is bunk. I'll have you know the Giants played a ton of zone last year. This move just makes too much sense. Madison will come fairly cheap, freeing the Giants up to resign vets like Clancy and Morton, and go after a free agent LB, possibly Arrington. The'll draft a CB either in the 1st or 2nd round regardless-who will need veteran molding. They already possess one of the very best pass rushing defensive lines in all of football. Which only helps mask a weak secondary. I mean if there is a better option [money,ability,leadership-wise] out there, I'd really like to hear it.
Plus they have Corey Webster already in the fold, he might earn himself a starting job sometime during the season, whether it's at the expense of Madison or Will Peterson (who only got a 1 year extension I believe).
I think Peterson's career is done in the NFL. And if he does some how manage to miraculously get himself back onto the field it'll be as a shell of his former self. The injury may be that severe.
Sam Madison has been an average player for years, I know Will Allen wasn't great but this isn't much of an upgrade.
This is a decent signing, though I would've gone for someone younger if I was the Giants. They definetly needed a corner though.
Good riddance Allen. The guy dropped every INT and wouldn't tackle. Madision is good, as GreenGiant said, a stopgap.
How is an older, slower player an BIG IMPROVEMENT? An improvement yeah, but not a BIG one...The Giants run man, somethin Madison cannot do anymore... And you say Jets fans are sunshiners? Madison can catch, ok? Doesn't mean he won't get picked on any less than Allen was. A CB market with Woodson,Law,Dyson, Townsend and even Ahmed Plummer. Plummer isn't much of anything, but at least he has some talent and is young. CWood is overrated, so it's good you stayed away from him...But Sam Madison? Yikes.
Miami losing Madison is actually an upgrade buddy. Losing Tebucky Jones, Sam Madison and Junior Seau isn't really falling apart. All 3 are done, maybe Tebucky has 1 season left until he's relegated to backup/special teamer.
