After the first preseason game, it's become pretty obvious to me, especially in light of last years inconsistencies as well, that Lachlan Edwards may not be the answer going forward. One major fault of Macc is not bringing in Punting competition and I hope within the next few weeks, Macc will be combing through the waiver wire for some quality competition. In a year where field position will be a huge priority, having inexcusable shanks is a major red flag for me. Bring in some competition and see who wins.
Is it just Lachlan,is he not getting the coaching he needs, or is the STs coordinator asking him to do something (directional kicking) that he isn't good at. He has a very strong leg. I agree about the shanks, but that should be something that is fairly easy to fix if we have a good STs coordinator who knows how to work with punters. The problem with searching the waiver wire is that I'm not sure that there is anyone out there at the moment, and with the changes in how players are cut, there are no longer several cut downs. Rosters go straight from 90 to 53 at some point before the season begins. If Lachlan can't fix the shanks, then Mac may have to wait until right before the season begins to get his replacement.
He is hot garbage, 14 yard punt, inconsistent...geez get somebody like Dave Jennings that punts 41 yards straight up in the air with no return
I'm not sure what his issue is because sometimes he has booming punts and sometimes he'll shank a punt for 14 yards. It happened in his rookie season, and it happened in the first preseason game. Macc will probably be looking for two positions (Fullback & Punter) as two possible positions to upgrade if the first preseason game was any indicator. Bringing in competition doesn't mean that Lach won't win the job but I am not ok with just handing him the job given his inconsistent performance.
He boots way to many bad punts for my liking. I agree, He's really inconsistent. Doing it in the first preseason game is maybe not gonna bring a lot of criticism but he did it way too much last season as well. Don't think they'll look for another answer so it is what it is.
If he shanks another punt in the next game, Mac should seriously think about replacing him. How's that for a shitty post.
I was surprised that Mac didn't bring in some competition for TC, but perhaps since they were rebuilding and not going anywhere this year anyway, he thought why waste the cap space. Then again, if Woody did tell Mac to let Harris and Decker go as many of us suspect, then he may have said don't spend any money on vets unless you have to.
His lack of consistency is a problem. Maybe it's mental, or the wind moves his drop over a bit. Whatever it is he has to go.
Ditto to above ...I may be wrong but coaching for a punter??.. Unless you are one of the Three Stooges lol
Punting, like most other aspects of football or sport, involves technique. and the proper mental framework. It could be a matter of flawed technique, he could lose concentration/focus occasionally, or there may be something else mentally going on that's causing the inconsistency.
