Walt, I was thinking the same thing about their adding Kerley because he can actually catch the punts and hold onto the ball. Now watch him fumble his first two opportunities. LOL
With the way the Jets don't (can't?) block on STs, can you blame him? Better to step out of bounds than get creamed.
I liked Kerley thought they were using wrong. Keep him away from punt duties and use him on 3rd downs in the slot.
I think they want to use him for punt in order to make sure there are no fumbles but I want Ardarius Stewart gets most of the time at slot, he showed a lot of promise in preseason.
Kerley wasn't much of a receiving threat when he was here, but then again there wasn't that much QB talent here to throw to him. What I liked about Kerley was his steadiness in fielding punts. I think he only fumbled one punt while here and that one he recovered himself. With this Jet offense, one fumbled punt could easily cost the Jets a game. I know he won't gain a lot of yardage on punt returns, but I'd rather have the reliability of a Kerley, than some flashy PR likely to cough up the football.
Why does everyone keep saying this? He had trouble holding onto the ball his 1st 2 seasons, 5 fumbles on 48 returns, so then he starts fair catching everything and cuts down on his fumbles but also seriously cuts down on his return yards. Last year he had 3 fumbles in 21 returns and only gained 7.5 yards per return. So now not only can he not hold onto the ball, when he does he can't gain any yards.
1 fumble every 7 punt returns last season, top 5 worst in the league I have to say though, I didn't think there could be 4 other guys worse at holding onto the ball.
I'm OK with the signing of Kerley till he will only return punts (or doing fair catches). However, if he will take snaps from Hansen and Stewart, Macc can go where I think with his concept of building a roster and youth movement BS.
