With the success of Darnold in Game 1 and the rapid growth as a player, I just wanted to pay some respect to the man that has had such a HUGE role in this growth, Josh McCown. Every moment you see Darnold, McCown is there by his side. In my opinion, he has played an enormous role with Sam. It was really cool seeing Sam hug his parents after last night's game and then seeing Darnolds mom give McCown a hug. I hope McCown stays on board for a while. He's a great mentor for such a young talent.
Give the man his props and a clipboard next season. If Webb can be a serviceable backup QB, we're in business. He's this generation's Mark Brunell although McCown is doing more for Darnold than Brunell ever did for Sanchez.
McCown was the 17th ranked QB last year. He's the 22nd highest paid QB. The 21st is paid $18 Mil. He really isnt overpaid. @ $10 Mil He was signed before we moved up from 6 to 3. Before we knew we would get a QB, never mind one that would be starting on opening night.
Is it because he is not playing that makes us forget that his style is similar to Sam's. Maybe its not a good thing to have a vet with limited career success mentor your franchise qb. Seems like Sam has made some of the same mistakes he was known for.
McCown is a merc. The Jets don't learn from past mistakes the Sanchez-Brunell, Sanchez-Garrard 'mentor' disasters. They should've let experience & coaching be Darnold's best lessons instead he's learning how to be a journeyman merc like McCown.
