He really did! I thought it was just his "thick" NY accent, but apparently not. He's the one guy in radio that has a sloppier sounding accent than Mike Francessa, and can't pronounce a word or make a complete sentence to save his life.
Joey Bada Bingo from NJ. The old overnights were pretty good. Some looney's used to call and he gave them all a shot.
Let's get down to the important stuff: what's the over/under and how long it takes for some prank caller to get through to Benigno on Monday? "Joe, whaddya think about da Mets' pitchin'? I think they oughta keep deGrom, Syndegaard and Matz 'cause they're a really good threesome. Whaddya think?" The key is how many times some caller can work the word "threesome" into the call.
Bernard McGuirk from Imus got him a couple of times in the early AM. Called himself Leon from the Bronx or something like that and told Joe he was going down to the studio in L.I.C. in the early AM to wait for him in the parking lot. Got him good. Lmfao. I hope they prank Evan Roberts as a participant with Joe. Lol.
Beningo won't be on Monday. He's taken a leave of absence. Since WFAN voiced its support for him yesterday, I wonder what happened in the interim. . https://nypost.com/2018/07/20/wfans-joe-benigno-takes-leave-of-absence-amid-sex-harass-suit/
More likely fear. He's a volatile guy. I'll bet they were afraid he'd go off the rails on the air. Either that, or they're afraid he'd say something really stupid that could be used against him (and WFAN) in the litigation.
Even if he is completely cleared of any wrongdoing, New Yorkers being New Yorkers, they'll prank him mercilessly (especially callers who hate the Jets). Look at how Fatcesa got demolished for months about falling asleep on the air and he wasn't even accused of perving anyone. Those callers WERE Jets fans (haha), but yeah, Beningo would get roasted on a spit no question.
Agreed, but I think it's a little more fine-tuned than that. His own personal attorney and WFAN's hired suits "told" him to take a leave of absence (a good guess) to muzzle the situation as much as possible simply by virtue of keeping him off the air; meaning, an attempt to keep it out of the conversation as much as possible, period. As matt opined, I also don't think WFAN would be able to screen the barrage of heckling (which is probably going to happen to some extent tomorrow, anyway). I think it's more both of those things than Beningo losing it or saying something unwise or incriminating of himself or the Good Ole Boys Club.
