My favorite game even though I didn't see it Iive. Stayed up late to see it on video tape. I tried to avoid hearing the result...(had my father take me to the movies to see Yellow Submarine) but someone yelled out the score as soon as I got out of the theater.
Well, Super Bowl III has to be my favorite game, for the obvious reason and also because I could see it live, but there's no doubt that this was a better game on the field. Didn't see it live, of course, but I listened on radio and then watched it on tape delay that night (fortunately it was Christmas break, so there was no problem staying up late on a Sunday night to watch). Biletnikoff was absolutely ridiculous that day, but my boy Don Maynard had a great game too.
Well before my time but I've watched this game on NFLN and online. Maynard was on the money that day. Battle of grits for sure.
Thanks man, I enjoyed that. I had forgotten just how good Jim Hudson was in that game. Jets OL was also terrific. Man, what a mess the field was.
I agree with you 100% and that game may be the finest hour for a Jets fan. This game represents an era when football was really football. Also the Jets defense at the end of the game was clutch stopping the Raiders in the last 3 drives. Maybe one of the best NFL games ever, but some Packers fans may disagree.
Johnny Sample doing his angry black man face in the opening segment. Haha, I loved that guy. I can't recall offhand what thread I said it in at the moment, but it's really crazy how many players went between Balt and the Jets, coaches, players, etc. Shula, that fukker. Haha. Sample HATED Baltimore because of what he considered rampant racism. And, of course, it was rampant racism. As in really sick chit. Namath, dopey as he was, never gave a crap about race and quelled a lot of things to his credit. Sometimes he would just let Sample go. I have to say, the second video, it's the 'Ren & Stimpy' opener on some level. As in TOTALLY. Dierking, help me out - I know you hear it. Go to 4:27 & 6:43. Anyway, it's peppered in there.
I wonder if that deep ball by Maynard in the 4th happened today...would it have been ruled a catch? I'm pretty sure but not 100%. Looks like he made the catch and a football move before fumbling and the ball going out of bounds. It astounds me how Maynard played in that era with a flimsy single bar helmet. No chin strap. Nothing on his forearms. Hutch youth shoulder pads. The guy was tough as nails.
Greatest catch, greatest play, greatest throw in Jet history Joe Willie to Don Maynard on bomb to set up winning td....by the way Don caught the ball and took 3 steps before fumbling out of bounds
They don't produce teams like that anymore ....the absolute GREATEST.. 1968 69 still gives me chills !!! After SB the deep hibernation started...haha
