Johnson is an upgrade, no doubt, but not a shut down corner...not worth that $ but we always have to overpay so its par for the course.

Just turned 28 so on a 5 year contract, usually the last 2 they can get out of with a minor cap hit. If he plays at a high level for 3 seasons, through 30, then they reassess but likely by the 2021 season rolls around $15M for a CB will not be that much.

I'd like to see them draft Penny or Michel as well, but if they plan to do that, why sign Crowell? I think they must be planning to trade up to get a QB and know that the 2nd or 3rd round picks that they would have been using on a RB will be used to move up in the draft for the QB. Therefore, I don't expect them to draft a RB unless it's Scarbrough in a middle or lower round.

Very true, you went into great detail, I was just surprised he was 28 thats all  ... hopefully he continues to play at a high level. I still would like for them to get rid of Skrine and find a new slot CB. They can still bring back Claiborne too.

Johnson may not "be worth" $15M per season, but we have $ to blow and he is a Top 10 CB, so he was going to get paid, and excels in man-to-man coverage. If Bowles/Rodgers keep him in man-to-man, Jets fans will be very pleased with this signing.

He’s physical off the line. Last time we had one of those guys, Bowles played him 5 yards off the LOS and rendered him useless against the freakin Bills. You’d like to think Bowles gets this one right...

Trumaine Johnson is now the highest paid CB in the NFL. He's also mid-range in terms of the starters.

Think Calvin Pace only he's 2 years older than Pace was coming in the door.

He's a good player but the Jets are likely paying him at least 50% better than his performance warrants.

In terms of cascading effects - the Jets now have a player in the locker room who will be a role model for Jamal Adams, in terms of what the next contract might look like.

Well, this is what it takes to sign big free agents in 2018...

Missed out on Butler and I think it turned into a "had to be done" signing.

When you have the money to do it, and you have a gaping hole... you do it. I have no issues with this assuming it's like most NFL contracts and the guarantees are mostly done after year 3.

All I'm saying is that the Jets just took an average player and paid him like a superstar.

As long as they don't expect him to actually be a superstar we're ok.

Jamal; Adams on the other hand is now going to be looking at how we spend money and if we don't make him at least the highest paid safety in the game on his second contract he's going to hit the market looking for somebody who will. He could be an above average player and still want the best contract because we just gave an average player the best contract.

The Jets seem to be unable to learn from past mistakes.

Players like Adams will learn from Mo and what went down. If you don't put in the work, you'll be cut and more than likely will be making 75% less then what you were initially making.

Mac likes creating outs after 2 years, the same will apply to Johnson more than likely.

Johnson is only average if you do nothing but look at the stats and PFF rankings. They overpaid him, but let's not act like it was a massive overpay that the Jets should be embarrassed about.

Depending on free agency leads to these tough situations. I agree that this is a ton of money and Trumaine Johnson (I would have preferred Malcolm Butler and probably Rashaan Melvin) who hasn't been a superstar, but also that he has a ton of talent, has played very well at times, and fits the Jets mold of CBs, so I get it. What would you have done if you're Mac?

He's an above average player who we payed like a superstar.
That's what the beginning of FA is all about.

He's also a nice scheme fit and we had a ton of cap to spend, so it's not a bad move even tho an overspend.
Looks like they can break free of deal after two seasons if needed as well, which is a huge factor.
