Your right, Winters has been incredibly inconsistent, that does not merit the extension he received. Johnson, regressed as the season went on, and Shell was injured again. As long as Bowles determines that the oline is good enough, Mac will draft oline help in later rounds as he has done so far in his 3 previous drafts. Don't be surprised if its defense again with both 2nd rounders after they take a QB with the 6th pick.
I think winters will be ok once we get an upgrade at center. He earned that extension with mangold next him . I’m willing to give him a pass there, but if mac wants to take Quentin Nelson from Notre Dame that works too
I don't think there are any in the NFL. Whenever this "concept" is introduced in the NFL, it almost always fails. It's big in college lately, but that's a totally different game. Not only that, but Dennison runs a zone concept, similar to what we struggled with under Morton. I don't see how he is a fit, other than he is a buddy of Bates'. The Bills interior OL / McCoy aren't walking through the door.
It comes & goes...usually w. defensive head coaches that don't hire qualified OC's & want a run heavy offense. I can't recall it ever being successful. I don't have a problem w. them sticking w. a zone scheme. It's been in place for 2 years now & it's a matter of finding the right OL & RB's to run it successfully.
Winters has been inconsistent, but I wonder how much of that is due to injury/players around him. I don't want to make excuses for him though because he got an extension and he needs to live up to it. It was weird to me how Johnson was able to have a good fill in season for Mangold when he went out to injury, but completely sucked this season. We need to upgrade the center position for sure because as a Franchise we've had Mangold and Kevin Mawae. Tough company to live up to, but we need stellar center play. Shell I like, but I'm scared to anoint him as our savior. At this point, Macc needs to focus high value picks/money on the o-line. I'm hopeful that the firing of Marshall means the jets recognize the o-line is a big problem and they are trying to address it not only talent wise, but how the position is being taught. No matter who the QB is, they'll fail unless we give them adequate time/protection to make plays. The focus needs to mimic the approach we had when we took Mangold/Brick together. If you build a strong o-line, it helps in all facets of the offense. Also, if we are gonna sign a FA QB, or draft one, we need to protect them. One of the highest priorities this offseason IMO.
Winters has also been injury prone. What scares me about the firing of the oline coach is this, Bowles may like the oline and feels they underachieved because they were not coached up properly and not because they are not a good unit. He may feel that it's about chemistry and not talent, that's why I said Jets might go oline help in later rounds and not 1sr 2 rounds. We will see what FA reveals.
I think, only change we will see on the OL, will be happening at C. A massive upgrade there will improve the performance of Carpenter and Winters too. Plus, keep an eye on the possible change of blocking scheme if Dennison will be hired as OL coach.
If that's the mindset it'll set us back. You cannot have 100 mil in cap space and 3 picks in the top 50 and not address the o-line in any meaningful way. Bowles will get fired if the offense falters cause ultimately he is the constant in all of this.
Absolutely--blaming the OL coach for the piece of shit OL the jets trooped out there in 2017 is insane. What is the OL coach supposed to do with Wesley Johnson and a bunch of low draft choices, and bargain basement free agents? You can't make an atom bomb without uranium. I also do not excuse MM for the terrible job he has done drafting or acquiring SOME talent on the OL. Trying to trade for Tunsil and failing doesn't exactly give him a pass IMO. I am sure in 2018 he will ignore OL again in the draft stock up on more DBs and receivers as he did in 2017,
Jets also will be interviewing former Lions qb coach, Brian Callahan. Wish his dad Bill Callahan was coming to interview to coach our offensive line.
Bowles: Something going wrong??? Hmmm ..who can I fire??...Maybe he thinks he is Trump except The Donald is a Billionnaire and US President Mac and this doofus take NO RESPONSIBILITY for anything Main Jet is 100 percent correct how Mac let the OL problem fester till it became a serious infection Macagnan was too busy busy trying to please his Coach and get back to back safeties rather than getting weed boy Tunsil..who is now clean..I guess Oh well..another Draft...up in Smoke..par for the Course Hopefully MM learns a little something here like Tomdeb posted ...its incredible how he goes all out on high Round picks for Bowles wish list on D but becomes a K Mart shopper with a crucial area for running our Offense I am so done with these 2 buffoons...plus after their screw ups scare away any decent Coaching candidates...it's like the bottom of the barrel attracts the bottom feeders ..so get ready...
Don't get me wrong...I'm disgusted w. Mac's drafts & the continue disregard for offense. Additionally there is no doubt the OL is a mess. However..I don't go quite as far as you guys w. the OL related criticism b.c w. the number of holes this team has had, there was bound to be holes this far in regardless of what positions were prioritized. If it wasn't OL, it'd be WR or DB..or..you get the idea. Just too many holes to fill. The only way around that notion was MAC nailing every single pick eliminating holes along the way as so to move on to the next one OR trading down excessively for volume of picks & then nailing said picks.Neither of those things occurred. The pool of OL talent over the last few years has been all time bad. Supply has been very low. W. that in mind I can understand the idea of filling other needs rather than reaching on an OL who has no shot of resolving the issue anyway. Again, I'm not removing blame from MAC/Bowles for our current state.Additionally there is no doubt that OL absolutely MUST be fixated on both in FA & the draft moving forward. I just don't go as far as thinking that MAC somehow deliberately overlooked or de-prioritized offensive line.
Maybe I am wrong Kurt but I it seems he deliberately panders to Toilet for the sake of getting along ...who knows.. Yes everything was a mess on the Jets but I can only go by his final decisions which were not great So that's on him Woe to anyone who partners with Bowles Looking to 2018 ..I would think Mac and Bowles together would be smart enough to see that the top 3 priorities are just QB QB QB This is just too frustrating and depressing at times.for me .....waiting for Champ Team from age 15 to 64 ..ugh
And he still hasn't fired the 3 worst coaches on his CS: himself, Rodgers, and the STs Coordinator (who is so bad I haven't even bothered to learn his name).
I don't remember who, but I've read of other teams doing this in recent years. I think the Jets have even done it before a few years back.
Mac needs to get us another Wookie for the offensive line this year in free agency. Andrew Norwell (Panthers) is going to be an unrestricted free agent this off-season. We need him, and then find a way "go get" Ohio State center, Billy Price by trading back or trading back in rd 1. What an overhaul that would be for the interior of the O-Line.
He should, of course, but he seems to have Woody snowed. IMO he should have been fired after his second season. I could easily see the Jets offense being ignored in both FA and the draft this year, the offense taking a step backwards, and Bowles still being our HC. That's what happens when the owner isn't committed to winning and is a clueless moron.
That would be great, but why are you so certain that the Panthers won't re-sign Norwell? Their OL is as bad as ours. Why would they let their best OL just walk in FA?
I don't want to pin this all on Woody or CJ. I think ultimately the extensions were given out to prevent any pressure being mounted on both Macc and Bowles and yet I don't even think that will matter if we have a repeat of last season. I think we are going to add a QB one way or another (Cousins or a draft pick in the first round) because both Macc and Bowles cannot keep on kicking the can down the road. I think that ownership is concerned about the perception that the Jets are similar to the Browns in that they cut bait with coaches and GM's too quickly. I personally find those similarities to be unfound (Rex and Tannenbaum were with the team for a long time). But I think they want to steady the ship given how poor the team was. I think this will be the year that ultimately decides their fate. O-line, and the offense as a whole will need to be a focal point because if not, Bowles is gone. I hope Bowles and Macc are smart enough to understand and use it as fuel to plan and execute their offseason strategy.
If they don't tag him, I would make him the first phone call in free agency. Fuck wasting our time getting our chain jerked by Kirk Cousins.
