Last offseason we signed Myers to a one-year, $705,000 contract. He blew away everyone's expectations by beating out Justin Tucker and Stephen Gostkowski for the AFC Pro Bowl nomination. This year he isn't going to settle for a cheap deal; he may demand a salary of $4+ million. Do we give it to him? In 2018 having an elite kicker was pointless, but if we contend for a playoff spot in the next couple seasons having an elite kicker will be huge. Of course, Myers's 2018 may have been a fluke, which adds another wrinkle. Post your thoughts below, including about the value of kickers in general. Note: For the poll question, assume the contract will be four years with half the total money guaranteed. This is typical for kicker contracts.
3 years 10m seems fair. Especially because he fell off towards the end of the season and wasn't great at the pro bowl.
I'd give him $2 million per year base salary, 4 million guaranteed at signing and add incentives and roster bonus's. If he continues to perform like last year he makes elite . ( up to 4 mill per season) if not he can be replaced.
Kickers need incentives...eg Make Playoff winning kick, regular to post season kick There's pressure anyway might as well pay him for it My guess is he runs a hard bargain and we end up paying him at least 3 per year esp since our GM can negotiate deals like Bugs Bunny
The Jets over the last couple seasons have had some good luck with kickers. Folk was fantastic for us and then went to TB where he stunk up the place, Catanzaro had a solid season for us and then went to TB and stunk up the place before rebounding in CAR, and now Myers was phenomenal for us. Hmm, maybe it's just TB then.
Good money 2-4m he was an utter monster from 45 yards plus, but also we have to be careful he wasn't a one season wonder, a couple of bad misses in the closing games has just put a tiny bit of doubt in the mind. If we could lock him up for under 3m then that would be great for me.
$4M per year is ok. Given his lack of track record, I would not guarantee much at that price tho. OR Go with something closer to 3M with a bunch of incentives that could make him highest paid Kicker if he hits them all. Let him gamble on himself in that scenario.
The question is whether Myers is a late-blooming Justin Tucker or he's the second coming of Cody Parkey (who got good money from the Bears after a career year in Miami in 2017).
I voted $2M or less, or cut him. We'll only be attempting 6 FGs next season with Sam throwing 60 TD passes. Bring in a rookie who can kick 60 extra points and I'll be happy. Maybe a girl?
