Leading up to the draft, I have been researching other teams, in hopes that I can avoid my obsession on how we're going to utilize our number 3 pick . I found an interesting article, attached below, that actually gave me optimism about our team going forward and should give some of you reason to believe as well. Most on this board would agree that they are tired of one year fixes and tired of seeing our team competitive for 1-2 years every decade (or more). Those early years with Rex, Mangini were definitely fun and I wouldn't trade them however I am ready to see the team built to see success for the long term and give us reason to believe every season. In my opinion, some of you will disagree, I see a lot of that short-term success environment going on with the much hyped LA Rams right now. I know I know.....they have the golden boy Goff at QB and that is something we never had. But is it a good thing that in 1 year time, they have 16 impending free agents to make decisions on? Many of those free agents include prime players that will demand big money as well. On the contrary, we have a good nucleus of young talent, we acquired reasonable vets who can be solid role players and structured contracts in a way where we can attain that talent and acquire new talent as well. If we get our QB in the draft, this thing can pan out in the long run. The good teams don't allow themselves to be pegged like the Rams will be next year. I have posted some critical stuff recently, but there is reason to believe Mac is a steady leader who can create a competitor. Lets see how it plays out. The rams are built to win in 18 but have the ability to retain many, but not all, of their young players (actually started this year). It’s the very same scenario that the Seahawks find themselves in right now. My hope is we can eventually be in a place that we’re faced with tough decisions on who to resign. That would mean we are a conference contender. This era is all about having the ability to draft and develop talent all while minimizing the hit on the 2nd contracts. The Jets have been notoriously awful at all these aspects.
If TGG was willing to make as many excuses for Bowles as we are Mac, we'd be anointing Bowles the next Vince Lombardi.
It's all about the QB position. We hit on that, and we are onto something good. We miss again, and the best we can hope for is more mediocrity.
I like the Rams' moves though. You have to remember they were the most boring and pathetic team in the NFL in 2016. Then moved to Los Angeles where they had a minimal fan base. Then they were somewhat exciting in 2017 and now they have a chance to be a top team in the NFL in 2018. These were good moves. Build the fan base, many will stick around in 2019, even if the team is not quite as stacked. They will be fine, especially if Goff turns out to be a FQB. Time is up for excuses for Mac. He gets his QB in 3 weeks. Adds a couple other pieces in the draft too. Mac supporters will either be proved right or completely jump ship by this time next year.
FWIW, I've seen plenty of Mac critics on this site. Anyway, he will keep or lose his job based on how the guy he picks at 3 turns out in the NFL.
There are Mac critics here. But the posters who criticize Mac tend to criticize Bowles too, whereas there are other posters who blast Bowles but give Mac a free pass. I don't here hear much of "there is reason to believe Bowles is a steady leader who can create a competitor," like the OP just said about Mac.
They are not building it right. They have ignored the offensive line. If they were building it right, we'd have a nice O-line and we could have a young QB step right into a decent situation and get better on the job. Instead we all have to pray that the QB at no. 3 overall is a franchise savior or will learn enough holding a clipboard for a couple years until the offensive line isn't terrible
Thank you. I was beginning to think I was going insane because I wasn't hearing this from anybody else. It will sure suck if we draft a great rookie QB only to have him physically and/or psychologically ruined like Tim Couch or David Carr before he even gets his feet under him as an NFL QB.
One of the problems in building an OL is you have to have players available. In 2015 they tried to sign the top two guards but they wanted to go elsewhere. In 2015 the OL draft was very weak. This year it is stronger but we do not have the picks available. I don't think we can say the FO has not emphasized the OL but rather we can say they have stuck to their philosophy of BPA and tried to find value. With a roster with so many holes sticking to trying to find value can mean not reaching on early round picks where the value is not there. I would love to build a dominant OL. It would make everyone on offense a lot better especially a young QB. I just do not see when this team will have the opportunity to invest high picks into the OL. Next year we do not have a second round pick and our 1st rounder could easily be used on an edge rusher or offensive play maker. Even with a 100 million in FA money next year there is no guarantee we will find a good upgrade that is willing to come to NY. I am really hoping we are able to find someone in the third or fourth round this year. Even then the odds of hitting on any player in the third or 4th round is not good. Unless we get very lucky we will likely only be adding to our line through FA the next few years which is sad as I view it as biggest weakness. Hopefully the addition of Dennison and the switch to zone blocking will be a positive improvement.
They did significantly upgrade the center position, which was the biggest weakness on the oline last year. They also saved next year's 1st, so they can draft a franchise tackle next year and will have TONS to spend again. I'm hoping they draft oline in round 3 this year as well.
I mean at least Wesley Johnson isn't on the roster ... interior part of the line should play better this season.
I hear you. I also understand the argument that you can't wait for everything to be perfect to draft a QB. Still, ruining a rookie QB is just as bad, if not worse, than picking a bust QB. To me, if you're gong to draft a QB, the one thing that has to be in place and rock solid is the O-line. The Jets have everything in place and ready to go, except for the O-line and D-line.
Good examples. Your statement sounds awfully like what could be the nightmare version of Josh Rosen. A very talented but soft, intellectual, some say entitled kid walking into brutal NY with a horrible offensive line and getting knocked around. yikes I could see him being shell shocked (for lack of better term) like Carr and Couch. I hope I'm wrong. Again, this is worst case scenario stuff but unfortunately the neglect of the OL for this whole half decade makes it a possibility
I was one of Mac's biggest supporters, but no more. I haven't see many positive posts about Mac here in a while. That said, Mac has done more right than Bowles has. That may not be saying much, but at least it's something.
That's why we have McCown and Teddy. Hopefully, it won't take two years to fix the OL. If it does, Mac should be gone.
The Rams are going into a new stadium in 2020 and need to make a splash in LA right now. If it pays off in a SB it's brilliant. If it doesn't they will still have a franchise QB and running back and pick and choose the core they continue to go to war with. They will have to let good players go and fill in with cheap draft picks. The Seahawks built through a couple of drafts and are in complete decline. They won a SB and got to 2. The biggest problem they had was not firing Pete after last year. They still have a QB to build around but they desperately need a new GM and Head coach. Pete hit his expiration date last year and lost complete control of the team and they haven't had a good draft in 3 years. There's nothing wrong with building through the draft. The reality is the Rams ownership is in win now mode and they have a coaching staff and enough pieces to fill in with FA's and make a run. We don't. If we get to the point the Rams are in maybe we should. Jacksonville got awfully close last year and they signed lots of high priced FA's. If they actually had a head coach who wasn't a wimp they might have won the SB last year.
That's really key. Jacksonville drafted well and were able to keep their cap clean to make a big FA move last year. They almost got a VLT.
Jets have no idea what they are going to get from Teddy which is why he is on a 500k contract. He may not even make the team... For our sake, I hope he plays well and makes the team.
