How did we go from a super bowl contender to a bottom five team in the league in 1 year? And I know all the optomists will say we have a shot to be respectable next year, but we do not. I actually hope we are not, because that means we cleaned house and are in complete rebuilding mode. But if we cut pennington, mawae, kendall, fabini, law, and trade abraham, we will most likely finish in the bottom five next year.

On another note, how did our management let our cap situation get so out of control? Question, if we didn't completely fall apart last season and we were going into this year as contenders, how did management expect to handle this mess? Cutting people is easy when you are rebuilding, but what if we were contending???

    What were they thinking?

The truth is... we were never a Super Bowl contender to begin with. This team had too many holes and question marks (Chad Pennington was the biggest question mark) to be a contender.

Age # 5 on the offense. I think that's the biggest reason this year.

How good were we in hindight?

2004: 10-6 against a schedule that included Ariz, San Fran, Seattle (who was soft), Cleveland, Cincinnati (who wasn't that great). Best games were against NE and Pitt that year and we laid eggs in those. We scored a total of 20 points. The light should've gone on. Doug Jolley for all the blame he takes wasn't going to solve those issues.

2005: Injuries to Chad (who's officially INJURY prone), Curtis (age), Mawae (age), Fabini (age and ability- there was something where he went for some sort of medical treatment and couldn't practice all offseason), no breakaway WR (not that any such person would've been useful with a compromised CP at the controls.). These guys can't be called upon to play prominent roles.

Well first off were not as bad as everyone is making out to be. Will we contend next year, no way, but with a good draft this year and the right personnel moves things can be back on track just as quickly as they fell apart. Like Petro said we had a lot of question marks and although they held up in 2004 they all fell apart in 2005. And when your QB is one of those question marks you can fall in this league that much quicker.

#8 a lot of players went into the year with fat bellies because they were never held accountable for their weight.

Oh come on P. From 02 to 05 people were expecting the Jets to be contenders. We were one of the best teams.

I think we were contenders in 04. We proved that but Brien had other ideas. No reason to think that last year we would not be contenders again. Don't we all want that? Every team has to think that next year might be thieir year. As for next year do you really hope we suck? I hope we come out and kill. Might prove we have a shot to make some noise more consistantly than every other year of every other decade.

Agree completely. 10 wins is not a Super Bowl contender, especially when it was against a weak schedule. And for all of the talk about Doug Brien, the fact is that the Jet offense scored 4 TDs in the last 4 games of the 2004 season, and 3 were passes to players who weren't on the team in 2005 (2 to Moss and 1 to Becht). The D was very good in 2004, and pretty bad in 2005, so which was actually the "truth"? And that doesn't even include the real problem, which was Chad not coming back from his injury, but instead getting injured even more seriously.
