My favorite was when Cashen would show up on Kiner's Korner and at the end Ralph would say "and for appearing on our show, Frank will recieve an Armitron watch". Like Frank Cashen wanted to have anything to do with a $19 dollar watch. _
Haha, then they went big time with the 50/100 dollar gift certificates. Some Kiner's Korner trivia: Kiner held out for more than the $75 per show he was originally offered. The Mets held firm and he relented. Ralph was the Mets' version of the Scooter with his malaprops, e.g. wishing all the fathers on Father's Day a Happy Birthday and mixing up names: 1) Mookie Brooks 2) Gary Carter...was on occassion Gary Cooper 3) Hubie Wilson Don't forget Ron Gardenhose. *hiccup* As you may recall JS, Kiner was a bit of a 'playa' in his day and it once carried over into Kiner's Korner when Ralph started hitting on Len Dykstra's mom on live television. RALPH: Well, you sure have an attractive mother and of course that doesn't hurt anything at all. And she follows your career and she's been involved with you. ... RALPH: Does your mother bring you luck when she's at the ball park? ... RALPH: Well, she's a great inspiration. There's no doubt about it. (Lenny nods). Marilyn, thank you very much for coming on the show with Lenny. MARILYN: (smiling broadly) Thank you for having me, Ralph. RALPH: It had to be a thrill to watch Lenny play like that. MARILYN: It certainly is. Thank you. RALPH: We’ll be back with Rusty Staub on his day here today and look at the highlights, and check out the scores, but first this message from Mitsubishi Motors (Commercial). They don’t have interviews like that on TV anymore.
Dykstra kept running into walls and getting hurt. Samuel under-achieved horribly after the Mets traded for him. It was just terrible luck for the Mets. If you look at what Dykstra did after the Phillies got him it was 2 All-Star seasons and a bunch of half seasons. With the Mets he was a bit injury prone but with the Phillies it was worse. Samuel didn't have the OBP to play high in the order like he did and he wasn't a good enough fielder to play in the middle of the field. He was a Felix Millan with more speed and less glove.
