http://www.si.com/nfl/2015/08/12/all-underrated-team-ryan-fitzpatrick-jeremy-hill-donte-moncrief Quarterback: Ryan Fitzpatrick, New York Jets Fitzpatrick, who will act as the Jets' starter during Geno Smith's recovery from a broken jaw, really isn't a downgrade, which says as much about Smith as it does about Fitzpatrick. But Fitzpatrick's talents do fit this Jets offense, and though he has never been a spectacular player, he does get short shrift at times for what he can do. Fitzpatrick is what he is and nothing more: a low-risk journeyman who knows his limits. That would be problematic in a passing offense with more deep balls thrown around, but tight end Jeff Cumberland may have been the Jets' best deep threat in 2014, and second-round rookie Devin Smith is the only real speed option among Fitzpatrick's targets. For the Texans in 2014, Fitzpatrick posted the NFL's ninth-highest quarterback rating and finished 17th in Football Outsiders' opponent-adjusted metrics for his position—and opponent adjustments would mitigate the impact of the six-touchdown game Fitzpatrick had against the Titans' pass defense. And by the way, he's not a horrible deep thrower: Last season, he completed 20 of 38 passes that traveled 20 or more yards in the air for 687 yards, six touchdowns and three picks. You just have to understand what you have and what you don't with a quarterback like this. Fortunately, new Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey had Fitzpatrick for three years in Buffalo from 2010 through 2012, Fitzpatrick's most prolific seasons to date, although he did lead the league in picks in 2011. Gailey needs to understand how to keep his quarterback between the boundaries. Steady, Jets fans. All hope is not yet lost.
Fitz threw 24 TDs and 16 INT in the final year with Chan, and with worse WR's than we have now. Those are QB numbers that can take you to the playoffs if you have a top 10 defense (which Buffalo did not have - but the Jets may - now go ahead and reference the first preseason game)
We have the smartest QB in the NFL, a young rookie that needs reps and may be the answer, and Geno. 2 out of 3 isn't bad.
If there's one stat about QBs I HATE, it's when people judge them off of their Win-Loss records. Let's just hypothetically say that each year he has started he has had the 32nd ranked defense. Is it fair to him then? By your theory, Russell Wilson (who has the most wins of any QB ALL TIME 3 years into their career) is on pace to be the best QB that's ever lived. That makes sense.
For veteran NFL QBs W/L is the most important stat to look at. Historically, Fitz is a loser, and he has been good at finding ways to help his team lose. Hope that stat changes. Go Jets
I don't get this notion that he is the smartest qb why because he went to Harvard That doesn't impress me when it comes to football smarts
It all comes down to turnovers for this entire team. If the defense is prolific in forcing turnovers while Fitz protects the ball then we'll be golden. His only problem is his gunslinger mentality which he seem to abandon last year when he could rely on a running game and better defense than he had in Buffalo. On paper we have a 9-7 roster if the quarterback, whomever it is, protects the football and we can actually catch the ball on the defensive side. The center of the defense worries me. Teams will stay away from Revis and attack us up the seams. I hope we keep Erin Henderson for passing downs. He's a lot more athletic than David Harris. We also have to hope Pryor takes a step up and learns to take better angles to at least limit the offenses big plays.
The Bills allowed 425, 434 and 435 points those 3 seasons. You allow that many points you're going to lose more than you win unless you have a great QB.
Alright I'm not Fitzpatrick's biggest supporter on here but are we really using QB wins as a way to evaluate him? Tim Tebow went 7-4 in 2011 despite completing 46.5% of his passes. Or, should I say, the Denver Broncos went 7-4. So I guess Tim Tebow is just a "winner".
Or, a better example; Matt Ryan is by almost any measure a top 10 QB in the NFL, but his QB record the last 2 seasons is 10-22. Because the Falcons suck. Not because he's a "loser".
