Its starting to look like Marshawn Lynch is way out of the Jets reach at 26, but I would love to have him. I know half the people love the idea while the others hate it, but I'd really like to get Leonard in round 2.
haha keep dreaming. lynch wont be there, ross, smith, and piscitelli are all day one picks and isnt young a center?
The draft nowadays is all about need. The fact of the matter is that there are a lot teams that do not "need" RBs. This is why in recent years, RBs with great college careers have dropped into the 20s very unexpectedly. Maroney went 21st, Addai 30th, Stephen Jackson 24th, Chris Perry 26th, Kevin Jones 30th, Larry Johnson 27th, Deuce McAllister 23rd...etc. It's not out of the realm of possibilities that the same thing could happen to Lynch. Although Ross had the potential he was never considered a Day 1 pick until this season, his senior season. He wasn't even a full time starter until this season. Some scouts have propelled him from an early-mid day 2 pick to as high as the 1st and 2nd rounds while others still have him as a day 2 pick because of his inconsistent play. I feel he is somewhere in the middle meaning late day 1. Your are going to find very few sites that would consider Brian Smith a day 1 prospect. He is a very productive but undersized tweener who does not have the rare size, strength and speed measurables that would cause GMs to take a gamble in day 1. Not to mention the fact that he will have to make a position change in the NFL to LB, a position he's never played. Piscitelli is a workout warrior so it wouldn't surprise me that after the combine he may move up to day 1 status just off his numbers. However, at the moment he is still a day 2 pick.
Why in the world would you want Leonard in Rd. 2????????????????? You want him as a FB there??? He's way to small to be a good blocker in the NFL- he was pretty good in the Big East- even if he was the best pass catching FB in the League by his second year, I still wouldn't take him there. he's another Askew type with little blocking abliity.
leonard would be a H-back in our system. schott would find ways not only to help him with blocks (ZBS) but to also use his speed, hands, and running abililty. leonard is twice the player askew was coming out of college. askew was just a bad pick. leonards blocking is underrated also. and whats this big east talk? if you havent noticed the big east is thriving into one of the better divisions. if my cuse could get it together, then its gonna be one hell of a conference to deal with.
The conference is good you are right-- but it is an offensive coference-- he hasn't played against 1 tough D in 4 years. WVU and Louisville are the best teams, and their D is horrible. Here is the rap on Leonard from a Draft site I visit... Is a fullback/running back 'tweener. Lacks the explosiveness and speed to play running back in the NFL, and is inconsistent as a lead blocker. Lacks the speed to get the corner on outside runs, and is not a big-play threat. As a pass blocker, must bend knees to maintain solid base and hold his ground. Bottom line: Leonard is the type of back who usually ends up being overgraded as a ballcarrier...he is the type who gets ripped by scouts who see his inconsistent lead blocking as something that never will improve. Leonard never will be a dominant lead blocker but should be good enough to be a starting fullback, but he could be a real weapon as a ballcarrier and receiver.
good points. http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/fb/brianleonard.html thats the draft website i visit. its a similar view, but maybe a little more in favor of leonard succeding. it quotes an above average and adequate blocker. the best blocking fullback, leron mclain, is said to be average. so take it for what its worth.
Like I said, we either hate him or love him, but you cannot compare him to your typical FB. Blocking is a question, but i dont think its one any of us can answer for sure rite now. Got to leave that to the combine. He will get a lot of looks in the second rd. and at some point one team will make the move and take him then. There are sites that dont think hes much, but there are also sites that thing hes going to be something special. I just know he has a lot better chance at trying to get past the entire Pats D than Askew does although Im sure hes smart enough to run out of bounds.
