if we're cuttin big salaries like kendall, fabini, law and we're makin martin and coles take paycuts. then wouldnt we be able to make a couple free agent moves? le charles bentley (4 years pro, solid player, underated cuz he was a saint) vince manuwai (4 years pro) matt lepsis (9 years pro, savvy veteran) stockar mcdougle (rt, yeah we need someone there!) what about dt? rocky bernard is out there (solid all year for the seahawks) and rb? chester taylor (could be the most underated pickup in years), deshaun foster
We have 34M to make up against the salary cap in 10 days. 26M we're reported over, and the 8.3M it will take to franchise Abraham. I don't think these cuts make us major players in FA. Fabini = 3.2M Kendall = 3.3M Law = 3.95M Pay cut to Martin = About 4M? Restructure/Cut Pennington = 7 M Restructure Coles = 4-6M Restructure DROB = 3M Cut Fiedler = 4.72M If we do all those, and hit my top figure on each, it's 34.72M, putting us just under the cap.
I think we'll probably go the build-through-the-draft route, but getting Bentley would be much like getting Mawae: probably pay a lot, but still get great value for your money. I'd love to see that. What I definitely do not want to see is us try and build our team back up in one year through free agency. It just never seems to work.
Not necessarily. The Jets will be cutting players to get under the cap 1. Cleveland Browns: $25 million 2. Arizona Cardinals: $24.5 million 3. Minnesota Vikings: $24 million 4. Green Bay Packers $22 million 5. Seattle Seahawks: $20 million 6. San Francisco 49ers: $18 million 7. Jacksonville Jaguars: $17 million Chicago Bears: $17 million Cincinnati Bengals: $17 million 8. San Diego Chargers: $16.5 million 9. Baltimore Ravens: $16 million 10. St. Louis Rams: $14 million 11. Houston Texans: $14 million 12. Buffalo Bills: $11 million 13. New Orleans Saints: $10 million 14. Detroit Lions: $9 million 15. Philadelphia: $6.5 million 16. New York Giants: $3.5 million 17. Dallas Cowboys: $3 million 18. New England Patriots: $500,000 19. Indianapolis Colts: Even at $93.25 million 20. Carolina Panthers: $2 million over 21. Pittsburgh Steelers: $4.5 million over 22. Miami Dolphins: $5 million over 23. How much does Sowell save us? And when the Jets trade Abraham, that 8 million is off the cap correct?
Notes: As first reported in The Star-Ledger, the Jets will place the franchise tag on DE John Abraham ($8.3 million) before Thursday's deadline. Nonetheless, the club might try to trade him, with San Diego, Washington, Cleveland and Houston as possible destinations. Mangini said he hasn't spoken to Abraham.... The Jets will release several players this week. Among those expected to be cut are CB Ty Law, T Jason Fabini, G Pete Kendall, FB Jerald Sowell and perhaps QB Jay Fiedler.... RB Curtis Martin, who turns 33 in May, will rework his deal and return.... The Jets aren't interested in Raiders QB Kerry Collins, a person familiar with the club's thinking said http://www.nj.com/sports/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1140500832187430.xml&coll=1
$8.3 million. The Jets may not trade Abraham until April right before the draft and by that time most of the FA's will be signed
391K for Sowell savings, and we'd lose all 8.3 if we trade abraham, correct. Abraham is not factored into the 26M over estimates you read though
The 26 million does not include the cost of franchising Abraham, that's why you hear 34 million sometimes which would be Abraham's franchise cost plus the 26 million over based on contracts of players signed for next year. To get at the cap, plus franchising Abraham you need to reduce the cap 34 million. Law is already 11 million so its more like 23 million with Law gone.
Cleaning house means exactly that, cleaning house. There will be no big FA signings this year if we are serious about rebuilding. Ellis
Law will only save us 3.95M. He's not 11M off the cap. His bonus is an OPTION BONUS, which triggers 6 more years of his deal. With the CBA in it's current state, it can only be stretched over 4 yrs, or 2.75M per. If he was on the team, he'd count in the mid 6Ms. Off the team, he counts 2.4M in dead money. This is because his 2006 salary was guaranteed by playing time incentives. The Jets then gave him the bonus in 2005 so 600K of it would be off the books for 2006.
We are rebuilding. That means cutting the high priced older guys with a continuation of a youth movement. We aren't going anywhere in 2006 anyway. Get the younger men some playing experience, fill a few holes next year ( again through the draft) and make a run at the Championship in 08.
yea...i think a definent NO to all of these b/c of the cap and b/c some wont even hit the market lepsis is the best one though...he is probably looking for about 5-6 mil per...savvy and expensive as shit
Draft and F.A. OK I see things working out good for the Jets. There are a few of F.A out there that could be cheap, young and helpful. I see some team signing John #56 to a big deal and the Jets getting a 1st round pick this year & next. I here the Lions are looking to cut Mike Williams ( WR ). A Solid number 3 reciever. ricky williams
