I don't like the way he ran the competition either. Seems like he did it backwards however,
Let's say he answers it with "not yet"
Headline would read, hack/ petty not the answer at qb,per Bowles.
Does he want to put his 2 young qbs on blast like that?
Let's say he answers "not sure"
Headline reads, Bowles does not know if jets will ever find franchise qb.
It was a set up question, to get an already over emotional fan base clicking more links.

Seems to me any truthful answer would require someone providing a Merriam-Websters' definition of the term "Franchise Quarterback".

Right now the FQB is defined the same way Porn is defined-- "You know it when you see it".

It's hard to answer a simple question truthfully when you've been playing in deception. That's why Bowles answered the question the way he did. Stupidly.

Bowles lied when he said it would be a true competition. If it was, McCown or Petty would have started the Giant game, not Hack. They were better than Hack throughout training camp. Hack got extended reps with the 1's in all three preseason games. They got away with masking his flaws the first game by calling a lot of dump offs. But the Lions, the worst defense in the league, exposed him very easily by stacking guys at the line. Against a good Giant defense he was awful. They did Hack no favors. A 22 year old kid who was a project QB, but because he was drafted in the second and was pushed into a starting role when he wasn't ready he is getting called a bust and is compared to Ryan Leaf.

Now even QB coach Bates who wasn't in the building last year is covering for Bowles. When asked why Petty didn't get any game time with the 1's, he said it was because Petty got a chance to start games last year (a different system) and they wanted to even things out. What a joke of an answer!

Had they run an honest competition, they would have started McCown against the Giants then put in Petty to get him reps with the 1's. Hack would have got the second half work. Hack would have likely looked better, and Petty maybe not so good. But if Petty showed with the ones what he showed with the twos, the CS could have rightly taken credit for Petty's improvement and showed they have a clue about developing QB's.

But we now know that Petty's improvement was not advanced by the CS, and likely hindered through limiting his reps and keeping him with the backups. And Hack was hindered as well by advancing him beyond his capabilities.

They screwed the whole thing up. They have no idea what they are doing and should not be trusted with a top pick in next years draft.

We have the worst beat reporters in the league. Cimini is a dickhead. Hughes probably gets most of his ideas from Reddit. And Mehta isn't fit for me to use actual words to describe him. The only one I liked, she got a job in NE last month.

I think I reached the end of my tether when he didn't name a backup.

Dude, you have only 2 QB's left on the roster and one of them isn't close to ready! If you can't see that then why the hell would you be trusted to train, prep and evaluate the next guy?

My only quibble is with the bolded phrase. I think that's certainly true for Bowles, and probably Morton, but not Bates. According to several things I read early on, when Petty was struggling a little learning the system and getting almost no reps, Bates was solidly in Petty's corner and made several comments to that effect. I think Bates may have helped Petty a lot, but Petty certainly deserves the credit for working his ass off, learning, having thick skin, and having a strong mind and confidence in himself in spite of how he was handled. I still believe that the way that Bowles and maybe Morton (and maybe Mac) disrespected him, lit a fire in him and may be at least partially, if not largely, responsible for his rise/improvement.

So,,,,,its the 4th and final / meaningless preseason game and I have to ask the question ? Why on earth if you named Mccown the starter for the regular season , your #1 QB , was he even on the field last night ? You want to talk about simply amazing shit ? Thats it in a nutshell . I don't know if Mac or Bowles was asked this as I was at the Yankee game last night and did not even watch the Jets or postgame . Inspite of this stupid move you guys that are hanging on to faith in Mac or Bowles are to be commended for your patience ! The team is going no where and going to lose SO many regular season games but lets be clear, it was the last preseason game NONE of your starters should get a sniff of the field , NONE !

Should just add 2 regular season games to the schedule CBG, Get rid of 2 wasted preseason games, coaches know who will make the team by now

I mean obviously he hasn't done everything perfectly. I would have given a bit more of a shot to Petty. He's certainly earned the backup job, and I'll be very disappointed if he doesn't get it.

Having said that, I thought he gave Hackenberg every opportunity to earn the starting QB job. In my opinion, he failed.

Yeah, why would anyone watch their favorite team cheering for them to do well when you can sit around bitching, sniveling, crying, complaining, whining and moaning?

From his interview at the game, I think that Mac sees that Petty is ahead of Hackenberg. He said that Petty had a fantastic camp and they are very excited with his progress and Hack has progressed, but he's just 22 and still learning. So I think you won't get Mac pressing for Hackenberg to be first backup so if it happens it will be from Bowles. I'd be very surprised and disappointed.

It would make an interesting story to hear why Hack was pushed ahead of Petty in OTA's and Petty was basically written off by the Jet media. They are backtracking now but damn if they weren't certain that Petty was going to be cut. Even just a week ago...

Folks on this board have better insight than Manish, dickhead Cimini et al.
