Carron Phillips with the Daily news and the Undefeated over on ESPN are being highly critical of guys like Kingsbury (failure at Texas Tech, fired for failing to win) and Gase (NFL re-tread fired at Miami and immediately given a 2nd chance) getting hired when the number of black coaches has dwindled to new lows. This is starting to become a general narrative regarding some of the questionable hires (of white guys) which have been made by teams in this latest coaching cycle, especially when it comes on the heels of black coaches (like Lewis in Cincy or Bowles here) being forced out.
1. Mods, please close this topic. Doesn't belong on the Jets main board to begin with 2. This is the wrong place to discuss this in general.
Tony Dungy was also on Golic and Wingo this morning with a similar thought. Although i wouldnt say Bowles and Lewis were "forced out" because they bother deserved to be fired after given ample time to prove themselves. The Steve Wilks from the Cards gota screwed big time
they should direct their criticism elsewhere. the New York Jets have had 2 black head coaches in the past 10 years and among the most black coordinators than any team in the NFL in that stretch. New England hasn't had a single black head coach or coordinator, for example. Washington Redskins as well
Any human being with a working brain cell who criticizes the firing of Marvin Lewis can be ignored - even Stephen A. Smith agrees with that. Todd Bowles immediately getting hired as a DC after his pathetic performance the last three years as a HC shows that if anything the league views him unrealistically positively, rather than unrealistically negatively. On the other hand, just as 20 years ago there were virtually no black quarterbacks, now (in both college and the pros) there are relatively few black offensive coordinators, and that is currently who the hot HC candidates are. To believe that that has nothing to do with the color of their skin, either directly (racism) or indirectly (they're not part of the old boy network of head coaches who promote people to be offensive coordinators) is IMO just foolish. The issue with black quarterbacks eventually resolved itself when coaches and owners realized that winning is the only thing that ultimately matters; I hope the same would be true for qualified coaches, but I can't say if or when it will happen. And please stop turning every random thought into a thread. Does the double doink kick mean that we're now going to be incessantly subjected to this, since the Bears are eliminated? Enough already.
