    I live about two blocks from Arthur's. It's known for steaks and hamburgers, but the sleepers are the chili and baked scrod. Both are first-rate.

    In the old days, the owner, Arthur McGreevey, used to be there all night, and he watched the place like a hawk, patrolling the dining area and the kitchen. He made sure the food and the service were up to snuff. They used to have a promotion whereby anyone who could eat the three-pound steak in one sitting got his/her meal for free. When anyone got close to doing it, the waitress could come over, ring a bell and all the patrons would cheer until that man or woman finished up. They used to have Italian food on only one day a year, Columbus Day. Damned if that Italian food wasn't the best around.
