A great reason to go to a great and historic steakhouse right in the heart of the Big Apple, a stone's throw from the Empire State Building, a few blocks from Bryant Park and the New York Public Library (both underappreciated tourist gems), and a 5 minute walk from Penn Station. Make a day of it. Keens, Keens, Keens.
Any Good Steak House is going to co$t----I was at Peter Lugers 2 months ago still awesome and my favorite = no credit cards CA$H is king,,,,Then there is the Old Homestead on 9th avenue in the City,,,,,,I have heard really Good things about Ruth's Chris In Tarrytown not sure if there are any in the City,,,,,,,you also could not go wrong if you take the kid to Texas de Brazil
The other thing to consider, if he likes steak AND lobster, The Palm restaurants (actually I like The Palm Too on the east side near the UN, I’m sure you’ve walked past it on surveillance) run a Summer Lobster Celebration with some massive lobsters that you can pair with great steaks. Very cool traditional steak house with caricature drawings on all the walls, saw dust on the floor. If you’re looking for classic steakhouse steaks at a slightly more reasonable price, check out Wollenksy’s Grille (next door to Smith & Wollensky, an old time NYC steakhouse). Same menu, just not as fancy, couple of bucks cheaper. Sounds like a smart kid, hard working, wants to persevere and succeed. What adoption agency did you go through?
Some of it also depends on what cut of steak you prefer. If you’re a porterhouse guy, tough to beat Luger’s, but I’m a cowboy rib guy and there’s was ok at best for a top tier steakhouse. For cowboy rib, my fav is Old Homestead in the meatpacking district. My buddy likes strip and used to work in finance and has been to all the top places more times than I can count and he swears by The Palm. Lots of great prime steakhouses in the city and it’s hard to go wrong with any of them. Really just depends on your taste preference. Just stick to local places and stay away from the franchise places(ie Morton’s, Ruth’s Chris, etc.) and you’ll be fine.
D. I am down to 238. Target is 220 by end of summer. We shall see. Thanks Rollo. Didn't know about Palm but I heard about Wollensky's before. I am sure we will try both down the road but now it is either Peter Luger or Keen's. Actually I used my middle aged slightly short Syracuse graduate lawyer.
Wow. Still a homely fat bastard but weren’t you pushing 270? That’s good progress. You should treat yourself to a nice steak.
Mine probably isn't a healthy weight loss. Some of the days I am under 1000 calories. A few high fiber cookies for breakfast, 100 calorie pack nuts for lunch and sometimes I skip dinner. I tried to shut down food from my mind mentally. Like I said, not healthy but it worked so far.
Just understand, Luger is out in Brooklyn so before/after dinner you’re not in Manhattan to walk around and see the sights. Keen’s porterhouse is really really good.
My first apartment in the city was right across the street from The Palm Too. Great location until they decided to bring down the building next door for a new consulate or something. They had the pile drivers going 6 days a week starting around 7 am. Right over a bar so have to take the bad with the good.
I made the reservation to Peter Luger for July. But I promise, for his next accomplishment we will go to Keen’s.
Now if you want a good steak and don't want to compromise this month's mortgage, try Charlie Browns. I'm pretty sure there's one near you and they have great steaks. The salad bar is legend! They used to be here in Central/Eastern PA but condensed their presence to NY and NJ now.. https://charliebrowns.com/ When they were out here, wifey and I were regulars. I highly recommend the Ribeye if you do decide to go.
Grandpa. I have one in 5 minutes walking distance and my kiddo and I go there a lot. I am glad you like it too.
