JAG tight ends shouldn't get 7 mil a year.

Nope. I'd rather Trey Burton then

I want $7 million a year as well.

It won't happen for me and it won't happen for ASJ.

Let him go test the FA market. We'll have him back here at $4-5 million a year, easily.

Dont overpay for this guy. If he gets that kind of money elsewhere, let him walk. He's a very average player - we just haven't had an average TE in forever and he's trying to take advantage of that. be smart

I like the player, and with a better team/QB, maybe he could be worth it.

But I think on this team, his production wont match 7M.

I agree, on top of that, he's a possession type receiver. Have you seen him break open down the seam and run fora big gain or TD? From what I've seen, there's very little separation and he's tackled immediately

He should start counseling the Dylan kid on how alcohol ruins your life...now that would help the team!..not much in the production department otherwise

Cousins with ASJ would be great. Really any QB would love to have a big bodied tight end that can also run routes down the field. But $7 mil a year is steep. Something tells me he'll be in the $4 mil range wherever he ends up signing, hopefully here.

Is Burton worth the signing? I really don't know much about him other than the Philly Special pass and him playing over Ertz one week during the fantasy season.

No thanks. Rather go after Trey Burton if that's the case. ASJ is a nice story and aside from football, I'm glad he's getting his life back in order, but football is football.

Ultimately, Jets will need to focus on making their roster better but also not overspending - just to overspend. We have 90+ mil in cap, but that doesn't mean we should overspend either.

Also, I know TE is gaining prominence in the NFL, but I would much rather overspend for a more premium position than TE.

Ball security is an issue for him, but overall he was solid outside of that. Hopefully they can agree on a contract in between 4 and 7 per year. 7 is too much, but 5.5m seems fair. There will likely be much competition, however, if he hits the open market and I bet he'd get more than that.

Your first line is quite literally the first thing that popped into my head.

Why don't we just assume that this is just ridiculous posturing to try to set the conversation higher. He has already turned down a $4 million per year deal, so this is sending the clear signal that he's expecting $5-6 million. I personally think that's too high, but if he is seriously thinking he'll get $7 million from anyone he's quite delusional.

The Jets shouldn't let their historically pathetic tight end play fool them into overpaying for an extremely pedestrian player.

5.5M per year, with nothing guaranteed beyond 2 years sounds about right..

too much for what he does. 5 mil a year is reasonable. i wouldn't mind bringing in burton either as others mentioned. we also have legget coming back as well off injury and tomlinson.

    Agreed.

I know he had 50 catches for a whopping 360 yards, which is like 200 and 2,000 to Jets fans thanks to our, as you referenced, piss poor history at the TE position, but when all is said and done, he wasn't that much of an integral part of the offense.

I'd say you can take the 2 year - $8 million deal or you can pack your bags and good luck to you in your future. No sense overpaying him because he was a highly touted prospect 5 years ago. He hasn't earned that type of money, not even in his big contract season. 50 catches is nice. Under 400 yards on 50 catches is bad and he had some crucial drops, catch rule or not.

I am OK for a 4-5 million range but 7 mil sounds like overpay.

i thought that at first, then i checked TE salaries

    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/average/tight-end/

7mil is actually reasonable he's better then the TEs making 6-7mil as it stands plus count for inflation. 7 mil would make him the tied for 12th highest paid TE with Gresham and Bennett in other words 7 mil is the price for an average starting TE in the NFL. plus walker is way underpaid

Wow... didn't know this. You're right, $7 mil a year is right on target for ASJ. I still don't love it, but he's right to ask for it.
