Yeah, you want him back of course, but there are potential negatives for long-term deals for sure. Speaking of Trotz, I thought maybe the Islanders would bring a Capitals player or two in to help with Trotz' system, but Carlson, Kempny, and Smith-Pelly have all re-signed. Beagle would be a great option as a 4th line Center. You'd have to pay more than he is worth, but have the space to do it. Maybe Brooks Orpik? He is old, but 1 year could help. That's really it though, as most of the Caps are returning it looks like.

That showed me that neither Trotz or Lou took the job with the idea that they had to win next year at all costs; instead they want to build off the existing pieces to create a long term winner. They could do that with or without JT

At this point it would seem the extra year the Isles can offer simply isn’t important to him. I suppose it’s possible JT isn’t looking for a long term deal at all.

    The rationalization is strong.

That it isn't important to him is as I expected. The real point is that either he actively doesn't want it (rather than it not being a deciding factor), or he's not coming back (since if he was he'd take it). At this point I'd put it at least 80/20 that he's not coming back.

And not trading JT is one more feather in Snow’s cap. And this is a guy who traded first round picks, twice, for pending free agents who refused extensions as part of the trade.

With every passing minute it seems more and more likely that he's gone. There's nothing left to think about if he wants to come back.

Exactly. Emotionally it upsets me, but pragmatically I don’t think it’s a disaster. It’s not a LeBron leaving Cleveland (the first time) where there was nowhere to go but a deep plummet. This team can only ascend; JT May make the immediate ascent happen faster but a steady ascent driven by young players growing together is possible over the next four seasons.

Heres what I have,,,,,I think everyone handled this poorly----> that said JT needs to put on his big boy pants and take well deserved heat for this. I personally think he handled this like a dick but I am waiting to see what the money is. He told the Islander NOT to trade him at the trading deadline which was a mistake the Islanders should have especially since at that time they had not sat down and negotiated with him in months ! JT said he " always wanted to be an Islander " and he " wanted to stay an Islander " he said this only 2 months ago in April = he lied. The Islanders are headed in the right direction now and I will say buh bye JT ,,,,I do not wish him or the leafs well I hope they are in CAP hell for years and that he and they never get a sniff of the cup. I now hope the The Organization licks their wounds and makes some moves but I hope and pray that in 1 month they announce that on the first night that they are playing Toronto at home that they are retiring Butch Gorings # 91 and that Tavares feels the pain that he deserves he handled this very badly and tarnished his image for ever,,,,thanks for the memories JT you went out badly and should have handled this with more class = we deserved better as fans.

Yeah, I agree. Especially how all of this is out of left field today with the tweets I just posted. Now all of a sudden being a Leaf was his life's dream. If that is true, he should have asked to be traded there this season. Definitely handled poorly by him and I doubt Isles fans can forgive that. Leafs fans will now love him forever though.

    Tavares who?

In Trotz I trust, I believe the isles have some good pieces in place and they were just used incorrectly by Weight.

Move Barzal to the top line with Lee and Ladd.

Try to bring back Ryan Strome to center the second line with Eberle and Ho-sang.

Bailey, Nelson, and Beauvillier on the 3rd line.

Trotz will make these guys play defense or Lou will send them packing.

Defensively they have to make an effort to re-sign Dehaan, Leddy and Dehaan can be pivotal pieces for this team.

I have a good feeling about this team even without Tavares.

Barry and Lou will get through this storm, honestly I have never felt this at peace about a team I root for just because of the coach and GM that are in place.

    No surprise. Oh well.

And I agree completely with TDK - Tavares specifically asked Snow not to trade him in February, which makes this a big screw job on the team. I will be very unhappy if they give him a video tribute when the Leafs come in - his achievements with the team don't really warrant it, and this ending would make it IMO quite hypocritical. Having said that, I'm sure they're going to do it.

TDK I read the tweets just after he posted them,,,he handled this badly and his comments in those tweets mean nothing to Islander fans if you don't believe me go to islander websites or read blogs people are trashing him! People are burning his jersey as I type,,,,Stan Fichler and other well known hockey peeps are trashing JT go read their tweets. He handled this like an ass and was not a standup guy thru this and basically lied, no other way to sugar coat it. Had he said I don't want to wait for the areas or I have been here long enough I will be moving on its time for a change we would be mad but understand. Instead he lied to all the fans and the organization,,,,,,I loved the guy but now he is POS in my eyes and I will be there when we play Toronto and I will boo him loudly with all the other fans.

Oh well, this was kinda expected. There's no way he's worth the kinda money he's gonna get in Toronto, or whatever the Isles were offering him. He's nowhere near the level of Crosby or Ovechkin. His leadership skills are questionable at best. He was neither the top scorer, nor #1 in points on the team where he was supposedly the best player. There were numerous games last season when they needed someone to step up and he just disappeared. Good riddance, really...
