    AND THE 2010 SEASON BEGINS!

    WEEK 1
    Thursday, Sep. 09
    8:30 pm

Minnesota at New Orleans – Minnesota leads the All-Time series 18-7 (2-1 in the playoffs). Interesting fact: New Orleans won the first match-up with two FG’s in the 4th Quarter. After that win the Saints would not defeat the Vikings again over the next 6 meetings; losing by a total of 175-41. Two key players from each team will not be playing in this rematch of the 2009 NFC Championship Game (D. Sharper for the Saints and S. Rice for the Vikings).

    Sunday, Sep. 12
    1:00 pm

Denver at Jacksonville - The Jaguars have won 4 of the last 5 meetings against the Broncos.
Miami at Buffalo – Buffalo has done well against the Dolphins, beating them 10 out of 16 times since 2002 but have lost their last 3 out of 4 games. Fun Fact: Miami did not lose to the Bills once during the 1970’s going 20-0 against them.
Detroit at Chicago – The Bears have won 4 straight against the Lions.
Indianapolis at Houston – A great match-up as Houston will look to get over the hump against the Colts. They have 1 win in franchise history against the Colts (27-24 win in 2006)
Atlanta at Pittsburgh – This is the first game with these two teams playing each other since their epic 2006 game. Oddly, neither teams QB from that day will be playing in this game.
Oakland at Tennessee – This game looks to be a very close game. The Raiders could make a giant step forward this season.
    Cleveland at Tampa Bay
Carolina at N.Y. Giants – The Panthers closed out the Giants season and history at Giants Stadium with a humiliating 41-9 victory last season. Now they look to do the same to open the New Meadowlands Stadium.
Cincinnati at New England – The Bengals last defeated the Patriots on opening day of 2001.

    4:15 pm
San Francisco at Seattle – This is an early meeting between the two teams who will likely be battling for the division title in 2010.
Green Bay at Philadelphia – 50 Years ago these two teams played each other in the NFL Championship Game with Philadelphia giving Vince Lombardi his only playoff defeat.
Arizona at St. Louis – The Derek Anderson era begins for Arizona in a game piting the last two teams to play in St. Louis.

    8:20
Dallas at Washington – The Cowboys have won 3 straight over the Redskins but have not scored more than 17 points in any of those victories. Mike Shanahan gives the Redskins a credible coach and Donovan McNabb (who will start the game) will make them a tough team to beat.

    Monday, Sep. 13

    10:15

San Diego at Kansas City - The Chargers have won 5 straight against the Chiefs and lead the all time series 50-48-1.

The 2nd meeting in the series came in 1970. The Vikings won 26-0 without scoring an offensive touchdown.

Their meeting in 2002 was great, too. Plaxico Burress was tackled at the 1-yard line as time expired in the 34-34 tie.

I picked the Titans to cover the spread. I'm thinking this is a ho-hum 27-10 win, but we'll see.

It'll be interesting to see how Cincinnati's pass rush - with Antwaan Odom back - will fare against NE's OL who have lost Mankins and Kaczur.

Minus his 5 sack performance Odom was on pace for 9.5 sacks last season prior to getting injured, so Cincy getting their best pass rusher back will be interesting to watch. And now with the car accident Brady was in (he may be a little sore / off after the adreneline goes away) he may not be 100% going into this game.

    Dolphins dominated Bills in 70's

The Miami Dolphins, who began as an expansion team in 1966, quickly took a liking to playing its division rival Buffalo Bills. On November 16, 1969, the Dolphins lost to the Bills at Buffalo’s War Memorial Stadium. It marked the last time that Miami would lose to Buffalo in more than a decade.

The following season, Miami embarked on a 20-game winning streak over the Bills that stretched through the entire decade of the 1970s.

In the 1980 season opener at Rich Stadium, the Bills finally beat Miami. The Bills faithful, who had so frustratingly witnessed defeat twice a year for so long, exploded in joy. At the completion of the Bills’ 17-7 win that day, the fans stormed the field and tore down the goal posts. The team’s long-time owner Ralph Wilson shared the emotion afterwards. “It’s the biggest win this club’s ever had,” he commented. “Bigger than the AFL championships. I’ll be happy to buy new goal posts.”

The Dolphins dominance over the Bills remains the longest winning streak of one club over another in NFL history. Here are the game-by-game scores for the decade:

    1970 – at Buffalo, 33-14; in Miami, 45-7
    1971 – at Buffalo, 29-14; in Miami, 34-0
    1972 – in Miami, 24-23; at Buffalo, 30-16 (B)
    1973 – in Miami, 27-6; at Buffalo, 17-0
    1974 – at Buffalo, 24-16; in Miami 35-28
    1975 – at Buffalo, 35-30; in Miami , 31-21
    1976 – at Buffalo, 30-21; in Miami , 45-27
    1977 – at Buffalo, 13-0; in Miami, 31-14
    1978 – in Miami, 31-24; at Buffalo, 25-24
    1979 – at Buffalo, 9-7; in Miami, 17-7

Head coach Chuck Knox was carried off the field by a few of his players after the win.

Both defensive touchdowns were short returns. Karl Kassulke (EDIT- it was Ed Sharockman) recovered one fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. His name was mentioned by the K.C. head coach in the Super Bowl 4 highlight film. Hank Stram was miked and at one point he could be heard saying something like, "Kassulke's running around like it's a Chinese fire drill."

Check that. It wasn't Kassulke with the TD. I should have checked the box score. He may have caused the fumble. I must have read that somewhere in a recap of that game.

I know that 26 is not the record for most points scored by a team in a single game without scoring an offensive touchdown. I'm certain at least one team scored 30 or more without an offensive touchdown. I had a list a few years ago but lost it.

I know that the Rams put 26 on New Orleans in the '83 finale without an offensive score. Here is the box score for that one-
    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/198312180nor.htm

The winner of that game was going to grab the final Wild Card spot. If the Saints had won that game it would have been their first winning record and playoff team.

The next week L.A. went into Dallas and won 24-17. Eric Dickerson ran for 248 yards which remains the high mark in a postseason tilt.
