I appreciate the two of you who picked the Mets and Angels for 1st place in their respective divisions, but don't you go and jinx my favorite team and my favorite AL team on me now. (My picks will be released on April 2. I hit on six of eight playoff teams in 2004. I nailed seven of the eight in 2005. I'm gunning for eight for eight this year.)

Ok, I have 2 things to say so far.... 1. I didnt want to pick the brewers to go all the way because everyone would think i was being a homer to them but seeing as alot of ppl are being homer to the mets, i guess it wouldnt of been wrong to pick the brewers as champs. 2. This is to 10Pennington10, how do you see the mets over the brewers?
American League East Red Sox Yankees Blue Jays Devil Rays Orioles Central White Sox Indians* Twins Tigers Royals West Athletics Angels Mariners Rangers National League East Braves Mets Phillies Marlins Nationals Central Cardinals Brewers* Astros Cubs Reds Pirates West Padres Dodgers Giants Diamondbacks Rockies AL Playoffs Red Sox over Indians Athletics over White Sox Red Sox over Athletics NL Playoffs Cardinals over Padres Brewers over Braves Cardinals over Brewers World Series Red Sox over Cardinals in 5 AL MVP: David Ortiz BOS NL MVP: Albert Pujols, STL AL Cy Young: Rich Harden OAK NL Cy Young: Ben Sheets MIL Al Rookie- Delmon Young TB/ Ian Kinsler TEX NL Rookie- Jeremy Hermedia FLA Explanations: AL took the Red Sox over the Yankees because of NYY suspect pitching, 2 guys are aging (Moose, RJ) 3 had bizaare anomalies in rates that cause inflation of stats that is unlikely to happen again (Wang, Small, Chacon) The tougher Al East this year makes me think only 1 team makes it, Yankees at 86=92 wins don't quite make it Central- Sox and Indians seem to have both improved on their teams. I think the weak bottom of the central will help the Indians overcome suspect starters. West- Athletics squeak by with some excellent pitching NL East- Braves over Mets because the Mets starters are far from impressive. Central- i think the Brewers will be the suprise of this year, very young talented lineup, Sheets is due for his real breakout West- Padres over Dodgers based on pitching, strong bullpen Chris Young is a great addition, also peavy is a stud Playoffs- Athletics steal a short series from White Sox. Red Sox too much offense for Indians. Sox overA's in the toughest pick so far. Red Sox are more balanced, better defensively. Brewers over Braves better #1, better lineup Cardinals over Padres- Peavy can't save them Cardinals over Brewers- Strongest O in the NL by far, solid staff Red Sox over Cardinals- Same as 2 years ago, Cardinals pitchers just not overpowering enough to beat a top Al offense.
I agree with most of it but there is one big problem. I'll start off by saying I'm a Mets fan... but I still don't see the logic in picking the Red Sox over the Yankees. Both teams have very suspect pitching: Schilling and Wells are aging and are always injury concerns, Beckett (although I don't believe so) always has the worry of being the next NL pitcher to fail in the AL, Clement didn't look the same after that dreadful injury last year, and Wakefield only seems to pitch good against the Yankees. I believe that both the Yankees and Red Sox have huge question marks in both the rotation and the pen, and the only pitcher on either squad that you can trust 100% is Mariano Rivera. Looking at the lineups, the Red Sox will benefit greatly from Coco Crisp and he might put up better leadoff numbers that Johnny Damon did. Ortiz and Manny is by far still the best 1-2 punch in the league, but behind those three the offense kind of scares me. The Yankees offense unfortunately has potential to be one of the best all time... and I'm never going to hear the end of it from the Yankee fans I know However, Boston's defense is much better then the Yankees. The only way Boston will jump the Yankees is if they get solid pitching which the defense makes look good while the Yanks get solid pitching but the defense makes it look bad. Watch out for the Blue Jays... they have a better staff and bullpen then both teams and they added some key offensive bats in Overbay, Glaus, and Molina. The 2 things that the Blue Jays don't have are experience and a good leadoff hitter, but if Halladay, Burnett, and Lilly have good seasons while STAYING HEALTHY they will definitely make a run at the division. The AL East is a wide open race this year and i accept that you're saying the Yanks will lose cus of their pitching, but it's not much better then their rival's. I can also respect your pick with the Braves over the Mets as I see that as a toss-up too. That entire race will be determined on the Braves role players like Francoeur and Laroche and if they deliver big the Mets suspect pitching staff will keep them in 2nd place.

True I don't see Boston's staff as great, but I do see it as better than NY. Using projected top 6 starters i will compare them. No. 1- Schilling vs. Johnson This might be an edge to the Yankees, While ancient Johnson still throws pretty hard, gets K's and had a DIPS ERA of 3.82 last year. Schilling's was 4.03, I expect Schilling to improve with an extra year remove from the ankle injury, but have to give johnson the benefit of the doubt, though he is also trending downward. No2 Wakefield vs Mussina Mussina is in a fairly steady decline, in large part due to a loss of velocity his DIPS era was 4.43, and i doubt it drops below 4 this year. Wakefield has an even worse DIPS ERA of 4.67, however there is no noticeable skills erosion as velocity is not part of a knucklers makeup, He has been fairly steady at 4.2 or better most years, and I'd put hin no higher than 4.3 this season No3 Beckett vs. Chacon The First real blowout in my opinion, Beckett has superb stuff, and most of his injury history was with blisters which in other players have disappeared leaving muggy florida behind. His DIPs ERA was 3.42 last year, and perhaps more importantly his BB/9 was down for the 4th straight year and his K/BB was up for the fourth year. Chacon had a terrible 5.30 DIPS ERA, his k/BB rate was ugly, and only an extremely abnormal LD% saved him No4 Clement vs Wang Clement had an ugly 4.76 DIPS ERA with a great deal of damage coming after the line drive to the head, however his K rate and K/BB rates were good he is a question mark, but if he lowers his HR rate he could see a dramatic drop in ERA, to the levels he saw before the All Star Break. Wang had a DIPS ERA of 4.94, terrible K rates , and a really really abnormal LD%, he needs to start getting strikeouts, or this year could be really brutal on him. No 5 Wells vs. Wright Wells is getting old, and is an injury risk, but his DIPS ERA was a decent 4.31 last year and his K/BB was 3rd in the league at over 5, the third straight year his k/bb was over 5. his DIPS ERA was 4.31 Wright is also an injury risk, his DIPS ERA was ugly 5.67, his K/BB was about 1. Just an ugly season. No 6 Papelbon vs. Pavano papelbon as a rookie last year put up a DIPS ERA of 4.33, a K/BB ratio of 2, and a K/9 of 9 Pavano put up a DIPS ERA of 4.63, continued a 4 year trend by raising his K/BB over 3, and a 4 year trend of sinking K/9. So bsed on this I'd take the Red Sox Staff for the season, also it helps that 3 of the Yankees starters are injured already.

Mets win world series over yankees David Wright hits a glam slam to win the 7th game in the world series by 1 off of Mariano Rivera
No way Wagner wins the Cy Young. Closers need to have spectacular seasons and have a weak year from the starting pitching to win it... and I like Peavy, Sheets, Carpenter, and probably a surprising pitcher like C. Zambrano to be competitive for it. Unless Wagner has a sub 1 era and whip with about 50 saves there's no way...

Relievers who won Cy Young Awards: Eric Gagne, 2003- 55 saves, 1.20 ERA Dennis Eckersley, 1992- 51 saves, 1.91 ERA Mark Davis, 1989- 44 saves, 1.85 ERA Steve Bedrosian, 1987- 40 saves, 2.83 ERA Willie Hernandez, 1984- 32 saves, 1.92 ERA Rollie Fingers, 1981- 28 saves, 1.04 ERA Bruce Sutter, 1979- 37 saves, 2.23 ERA Sparky Lyle, 1977- 26 saves, 2.17 ERA Mike Marshall, 1974- 21 saves, 2.42 ERA I don't think it is crazy to predict Wagner to win the Cy Young Award. Many people think the Mets starting pitching is mediocre and that the team will play many close games. This would suggest that Wagner would get the opportunity to save 50 some games, if he stays healthy.
