So why is this in the Jets forum? Obviously because of Idzik. It gives a little info on how they managed things and what I believe will be the plan moving forward not Only in this cap tight year, but in the following years. Sort term contracts to keep players motivated and to keep from locking our selves into this type of situation. Quote:

I can already see a similar movement... Idzik seems like he is going to try and play younger players and try and develop the youth already on the roster without making any huge splashes in FA. Until we are in a good position to try and make a strong push through the playoffs, I expect Idzik to be relatively low key in FA, trying to keep the cap low. He may be a victim of circumstance with the Jets cap, but looking back on how Seattle was handled, I would expect something similar to this even if the cap wasnt a huge hinderance.

Love it
becoming the AFC's version of the Seahawks would be great with the Patriots being our 49ers per say Anyway Idzik has a vision and a direction and I think he'll follow course and keep building which is why I think 2013 is a transition year and 2014 we'll be back in the playoff hunt

IIRC, the Seahawks made it thier second year under the current staff. TE big factor, as much as we hate to hear it, is mark Sanchez. If MM can turn him into a viable NFL QB we could be back sooner than most think. If he truly is a lost cause, we are a couple years away.

I'm trying to be negative towards Idzik, or this policy in Seattle, but had they not struck gold with Russ Wilson, I think there'd be a different perspective around the league with Seattle.
The "paying as you go along and seeing how these young guys develop first" only works if the draft picks are good and develop. Do you think this policy would've worked had Seattle not hit big on some of their outside-the-box draft picks? I wonder how much Idzik was involved in the draft process. If he had a big role in the choosing of the players than I am more encouraged. Not only that, but we are viewing Seattle through a smaller window...right now they have a lot of young talent on the cheap. But eventually, they are going to have to pay these young players big dollars no matter what. Sherman, Wilson, Irvin, Branch, etc. and they are not going to be able all of them and they are going to look a lot like the Jets do now. It's a cycle. 2010 Jets had the most players in the league on a contract year. You could say the Jets followed a similar policy prior to that time of acquiring as much talent as they could across the board and paying as they went along.. they were successful But then they HAD to pay their young players and lost quite of bit of those smaller pieces.. Ferguson, Mangold, Harris, Revis, Sanchez (ugh), etc.. I could see Seattle in a similar position in a couple years.. so I'm not ready to laud them as some sort of beacon organization just yet. |

It's a cycle, yes. However, if you're good at identifying talent, your bad seasons become of the 8-8 variety instead of the 6-10 one.

Seattle won last year because of their defense not their offense. Wilson had a great year but if you look inside the numbers the thing that got the Seahawks to 11-5 was the defense.
Seattle scored 150 points over a 3 week span (think about that for a minute) in December with Wilson passing for 524 yards over the 3 game span. He threw 57 passes, or 19 a game over that span. In the 58-0 win he completed 53.8 percent of his passes for 148 yards, a TD and an Int. Sound positively Sanchez-esque circa 2009 to you? Seattle probably wins 10 or 11 games last year with Matt Flynn at QB. The QB wasn't the story, the defense was. BTW, the Seahawks rushed for 724 yards over that 3-game span or an average of 241. I hope Rex can adapt and still create great defences.I hope he stays, despite the fact I have a few issues with him.

The best thing I've heard all off season "There will be competition at every position" No longer will anyone be anointed nor should they feel self entitled.

Their team is great because of the defense and running game. Lynch is a monster and they have a top 3 defense. This is why it gives me hope with the Jets while Rex is controlling the defense. If we get that pass rusher we have needed and we develop a quick and effective run game, we won't need an elite QB. Hell, Garrard could possibly get us 9+ wins with a top 5 defense and top running game |

Seattle is only going to a SB if they got lucky on Wilson and he makes the jump to the next level. If he does in a couple of years all of this talent is going to have to be paid. |

Yes Seattle needs to resign some of thier guys, but as they showed with Washington they will not hesitate to let a guy go when needed. You will not see guys like Eric smith getting 3 mill a season, nor will you see slightly above average starters like Harris or Pace getting 9 mill a year. The days of the big splash are behind us for now, maybe for always. This is a good thing. Trading away most of your picks several years in a row are also gone. Again this is a good thing. It's going to be a steady build instead of going for the quick fix. Players will not play base on their pay rate or draft status.

Exact replica of our 2009/2010 season, minus the championship games that we reached and they haven't. A top running game and top defense goes a long way |

The Lynch pickup a few years ago was huge for them.
