Apparently, the days of ground-and-pound in New York are over, and the speculation about another controversial quarterback has already begun.

According to multiple reports, the Jets are going to hire former Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg to replace Tony Sparano.

After the Jets finished 30th in the league in offense, that’s no surprise. But Mornhinweg represents a significant stylistic change for head coach Rex Ryan and the Jets considering Mornhinweg’s West Coast Offense background and heavy lean toward the passing game.

The New York Daily News points out that this increases the possibility of pursuing Michael Vick, if new Eagles coach Chip Kelly doesn’t keep him.

There are about eight layers of chaos that would ensue if that happened, but nothing about the Jets makes you think they wouldn’t welcome it, or that it wouldn’t be an upgrade over Mark Sanchez and what they’ve been doing.

You hire your GM AND OC on the same day. Shouldn't the new GM have some say in that decision? Who in the FO decided that Marty was the right fit...SOJ...

Oh look at that, some people complaining.

That being said, I would have preferred Vince Lombardi, but in reality a steaming pile of crap would be better than Sparano.

Marty might just be a welcome change, although i have my reservations about the WCO.

the thought of bringing in Vick just made me physically ill tho..

not a huge fan. was hoping for lombardi. i do not want vick but considering rex loves him, mornhinweg has ties to him and the wizard of IZ(good?no good?) was with seattle and a mobile qb i think its a better than average chance it happens.

as a pitbull owner vick will be hard to root for

As was said in the press conference weeks ago, the GM handles personnel decisions and Rex handles coaching decisions, as is the case with most franchises.

In 1995 and 1996, Mornhinweg was a coach with the Green Bay Packers, first as an offensive assistant, then as the quarterbacks coach. From 1997 to 2000 he was with the San Francisco 49ers, as offensive coordinator under Steve Mariucci.

During the 2001–2002 seasons, Mornhinweg was the head coach of the Detroit Lions, where he compiled a 5-27 record.

The most notable moment in Mornhinweg's history as a head coach came during a 2002 game against the Chicago Bears. The game went into overtime, and the Lions won the toss. However, Mornhinweg felt that having the wind in his favor was more important than getting the ball, despite having as his kicker Jason Hanson, who hit a then-NCAA record 62-yard field goal in his college days at Washington State University. He elected to kick rather than receive. As it turned out, the Lions never got the ball; on the Bears opening drive, Chicago scored a field goal to win the game. Mornhinweg's decision was that season's runner-up for the Terry Award to Dwayne Rudd's premature helmet toss celebration that cost his Cleveland Browns a victory.

Mornhinweg masterminded the Eagles offense in the final six games of the 2006 season, and into the NFC Playoffs. Coach Andy Reid gave Mornhinweg the play calling responsibilities after the Eagles' disastrous loss to the Indianapolis Colts, 45-21. The Eagles won all six games, employing a more balanced run/pass attack. The wins included an unprecedented three consecutive December divisional road games, all with a back-up quarterback, Jeff Garcia. It was the only time Reid yielded play calling responsibilities, a role Mornhinweg continued through the 2007 season.

not bad, it's growing on me.

as a pitbull owner, i'd also hate a Vick signing.
as a knowledgeable football fan, i'd hate a Vick signing even more.

No...that's Ryan's choice solely.

He may not be the right guy but he is exactly what Ryan wanted..somebody who will push the envelope on offense..of course now we need a QB who can throw the ball with accuracy more then 3 yards behind the line of scrimmage. I am sure that has been discussed with both the new OC and GM before they were hired.

Please draft Cordarrelle Patterson with the first pick.

Rotoworld Writeup:

Jets hired Marty Mornhinweg as offensive coordinator.

Mornhinweg spent the past seven seasons as Andy Reid's offensive coordinator in Philadelphia. He will replace Tony Sparano's spitball offense with a West Coast, pass-first system that will be very different from what the Jets have run in recent years. Mornhinweg's hire will be less impactful than the offensive roster moves the Jets make this offseason. They need better players. If Michael Vick is released by the Eagles, as expected, it will be interesting to see whether he reunites with Mornhinweg in New York. The NY Daily News reported in mid-December that Jets head coach Rex Ryan "loves" Vick.

Rex. He is the defacto director of Football Operations.

And, FWIW, that's a smart move. Rex has adapted to the modern NFL, something Schottenheimer, and Sparano never managed to do.

We should get a three seconds and out version of offense, that will make Nacho look more like the Rose Bowl guy we drafted...
