Default Jets have the worst cap situation in the NFL

Eight teams, though, account for 79 percent million of total room. The Cincinnati Bengals saved $8.5 million of cap room in 2012 and made the playoffs for the second consecutive year. The Miami Dolphins have $35.8 million, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers $31.3 million, the Jacksonville Jaguars $22.1 million, the Buffalo Bills $20.6 million and the Tennessee Titans $19.4 million.

On the negative side, the New York Jets are $19.4 million over the cap. The Dallas Cowboys are $18.2 million over, the New Orleans Saints $14.7 million over and the Carolina Panthers $11.8 million over.

Jets will be in much better shape after they cut Jason Smith, Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, Eric Smith and Brandon Moore.

At least 2(Arguably 3) of which you can find replacements in the draft who can be as good if not better at this jobs.

He is. We see this article every year.

Yet it's never affected the team.

Brandon Moore isn't going anywhere, Smith and Smith are useless. Scott's replacement is already on the roster. Pace, is the question.

Same old recycled espn crapola.

After the release of obvious dead woof..tebow...scott..pace..thomas...pouha...smith. ..and before any salary restructuring, I have the Jets with around 18 million under the cap after reserving the 6 M for rookies

I think Scott will return although restructured as will Pouha.

And Moore should go no where. There is no replacement for him on this team and he can easily give another year or two of great play at the position.

You dont need to spend to be good, this team isnt getting fixed through free agency, it will be fixed through the draft.

Hopefully we don't sign anyone so we have a clean slate next offseason when Rex is fired.

Pretty much what I was gonna post.

We're not as bad (in cap space -- don't wanna get that discussion going) in shape as the media is making us out to be.

To what do you attribute the deplorable lack of depth this past season?

Don't they get $12 mil for dumping Jason Smith alone? That's more than half of the 19 in a single move.

He's a free agent.

Exactly. How do people not realize the Jets are already experiencing cap problems based on the players we put on the field this past year, especially on the offensive side of the ball? They needed to save money in '12 to drag it to the '13 years cap to try to ease some of the crunch. This year we will see similar effects, i.e. no big free agent signings and depth issues.

It's going to be interesting what we're going to do with Pouha... if we cut him it's 2.3 mill in dead money, if we keep him he counts for 6.2 mill against the cap AND it all becomes guaranteed money on the first day of the new league year.

What do we do? He's had a lot of physical problems... we might be better off cutting him and keeping DeVito for 2 mill a year... or asking him to restrucuture his deal (i.e. accept a 2 mill paycut)

PS Keep in mind come September 2013 Pouha will be 34, DeVito 29

The only place it showed was on the hands team. You can deal with Cumberland for Keller, but Keller and Holmes at the same time, in the first year of a new system, then Hill....to much for any GM no matter how far sighted....

Granted they did waste time getting in competent help.

You also lost your defensive cornerstone, the best defensive player in football...and suffered numerous injuries in the secondary and finished number 8 overall.

The only place they lacked depth was in the receiver corps.
