Default Dennis Thurman expected to be made new DC

Defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman is expected to be named as the new defensive coordinator, the Daily News has learned.

Rex Ryan announced Tuesday that current defensive coordinator Mike Pettine has decided to move on from the Jets after rejected a contract extension from the team earlier this season.

The defense will have a similar dynamic as Ryan had with Pettine in 2009, as Thurman and Ryan are expected to share the play-calling duties. Thurman, like Pettine, worked with Ryan dating back to their time in Baltimore.

Also like this quote:

As we mentioned before, Thurman appears like the likely candidate. One former personnel exec told me he can run a D with 11 HS seniors. #nyj - Conor Orr

That is a nice quote. I like Pettine but Rex was the mastermind, as long as he was back we'd be ok on D.

I saw this coming as soon as Pettine was announcing he was leaving. Rex Thurman and Pettine were all really close and meet every week to announce the upcoming Defensive gameplan. Rex has always talked those 2 up so much that with Pettine leaving Thurman stepping up was the obvious choice. Not to mention I think he is better then Pettine and the secondary has been our strength since he's been here.

I?m happy... and quite frankly he's deserved it. Look how well our secondary has played over the years! (Except for Rex's fetish: Eric Smith).

Continuation of a defense that has been among the best for 4 years now.

Cant wait for Mo Wilk next season

Fine with me. The success we have had on defense goes in large part to Rex, not to say Pettine isn't deserving of credit as well but Rex is the mastermind behind it all.

Well good luck in Buffalo, Pettine. Hopefully their D won't be able to stop anyone from converting on 3rd down either.

I read on twitter that it's confirmed he IS the new DC.

Brian Costello ‏@BrianCoz
Source confirms that Dennis Thurman is the new defensive coordinator, as Rex hinted at in press conference. #nyj

who the DC is does not matter. Rex pays no attention to anything but the D. The DC is there tohold his coffee cup during practice.

He is the first guy the Bills are interviewing out of many candidates. It is certainly not a given that 1.) the bills like him enough to offer him the job, and 2.) after offered the job, Pettine accepts.

There were many coaches fired and many D-coordinator slots to be filled around the NFL. I would imagine Pettine will get a look for many gigs, and would definitely go to a place where he could run a 3-4 defense. I'm not totally sold on the fact that the Bills want to go back to the 3-4. It might not be a match.
