Default Joe Namath overrated?

Like Sanchez, he has a career completion percentage of 50.1%. Career passer rating of 65. And more INTs than TDs.

I guess winning a Super Bowl covers over a multitude of things.

I never saw him play (before my time), but what do Jet fans who go back to that era think?

I always thought he was a blowhard drunk...I use to hate listening to him when he was in the booth for fins games...I can still here his rants!

Different era.

He was a good QB and mouthed off at the right time. Not sure he'd make it in today's NFL.

I've always said he was overrated. Done a thread a year or so ago about it. If the Jets D and RB don't win that Super Bowl he just another flashy QB who sucked.

He's overrated because of his guarantee. GOOD QB when you consider his era, NOT HoF-worthy.

He'd be great in this era due to the rules.

Fortunately, through the use of the tag feature we don't have to write the same stuff for the umpteenth time.

Well, he would never survive in today's era. He's definitely not worthy of the HOF because of performance, but the Super Bowl guarantee did him wonders.

different era different rules.

If Namath played now he would throw for 5000 and 40 Tds , as it is he had a 4000 yard seaosn with 32 Tds (in 14 games) when you could tackle the receiver practically while the ball was in the air.

Good post, he threw for 4,000 yds when QB's where throwing for 2500....you had to actually watch him play to understand how good he was...I like what he said on the Michael Kay show last week about San-cheese when he underthrew Hill by 15 yards, Kay asked him what he would have done and Namath said I would hit him right in the chest and we would have won...

NO I wouldn't start Tebow the 2nd half. I'd start Sanchez and expect him to play better. Hell, I'd expect the whole team to play better.

Mark has missed open receivers AT LEAST 4 times. I'm being kind. @LuigiNYC is it Sanchez or the line that is struggling today?

Keller and Kerley were too close together on that 3rd down pass. Obviously there's confusion or undisciplined route running.

He may not be getting A LOT of time, but he had ENOUGH. That was just a bad pass. AGAIN.

Have yet to see anybody that watched Namath play call him overrated. Also, don't compare stats between different eras in any sport because there's too many rules changes. The whole concept of letting receivers run downfield and can't be manhandled until the ball is there (or within 5 yards of line of scrimmage) didn't even exist back then.

i cant believe what im reading. this guy would THRIVE in todays era. Receivers are faster, rules would be in favor, his arm was amazing, despite his percentage (which was pretty good at his time, few were throwing around 50 something percent) he had an accurate arm. This guy was the first to throw for 4000 yards in a NON throwing era.

Please, this guy would be a beast. Most qbs back then would thrive now.

This thread highlights the problem of this board. Joe Willie is the most famous player in this franchise's history for many reasons. Ask any star player from his era and they'll tell you how great of a QB talent he was. To say he was overrated is just plain stupid.

I don't think Namath's football talent (even in the context of his era) should get him in the HoF. He needs to be there, however, because of the guarantee and what it did for football.
