Default The Onside Kick

I legitimately think that the call for the onside kick was the worst in game coaching decision I have ever seen Rex make. They had the momentum after that return, and by attempting that play they gave the momentum right back. He was not at his best last night, I don't think there's much doubt about that. I'm not giving up on him. Tannenbaum I'm done with, I don't know how he could have thought our RB situation was square. Rex is a good coach, I firmly believe that. He needs a new GM to try to rebuild the talent on this offense. While I identify that there are some mistakes Rex has made this season, I truly think that giving up on him after this season would be a mistake. I don't agree with this notion that him and Tannenbaum are "connected". How does that make any sense whatsoever? Tanny was here before Rex! Its not like he's Rex's guy, or vice versa.

The only thing I worry about is that Woody is involved with the dealings way too closely and will not give up his puppet-master privileges that he has with Tannenbaum. If this is what is happening (and I fear it is), then we are in BIG trouble for the future.

No it wasn't, the defense was gassed and they would have been out there again after giving up a long drive. It was worth the gamble I think.

the texans offense would have most likely driven down the field quickly on a very tired jets defense. it was worth the shot to get some extra points on the board / give the defense some rest.

The exact opposite of this thread would have been made if Chaz Schilens would have caught the ball.

Rex took gambles in the game and most of them paid off. He had to because of the talent differential. His explanation was perfect, he came to win.

Failing on the onside kick didn't give the Texans any momentum, it just gave them good field position. There is a difference.

I didn't like the call, we gave up 3 easy points on that drive. I would have preferred that they kicked it deep and make the Texans drive the field for the FG. It would have been a 3 point game if we could have stopped them on that drive.

Exactly, if Schillens holds onto the ball and we score a TD it's a brilliant call.

My feeling, it was a good call, the execution failed

I thought the onside kick was a great call. The defense was on the field the entire quarter and the texans just marched down the field and settled for a field goal. It was desperate but it was also gutsy and with an offense that is incompetent you have to resort to things like that to beat teams that are just clearly better than you. If Schilens comes down with the ball we are saying what a great cAll it was today and who knows we may have even been sitting at 3-2

i hate the call even if it was a success. We had all the momentum at the point, no doubt the defense would have held.

Everyone complains about the lack of talent this team has, so when the coach thinks outside of the box to make up for that lack of talent, he gets ridiculed. But if the Coach stays within the box with a lack of talent, he is ridiculed for not getting more creative.

I wouldnt have minded it if we were down by 4 or 5, but we were down by 6 so putting our opponent in FG Range practically would make the game 2 possesions and harder to win.

It wouldn't had matter if Chez held onto the ball they called penalty on him for touching the ball to soon. But I like Rex for trying it.

Guess you all missed where the Ref got on the mike and said "there was no foul" as the ball had traveled the necessary distance. /shrug

It was a stupid call, but obviously Ryan felt his tream could not win without gimmicks. That's the bottom line. After the KO return TD, momentum had swung. Losing the on sides kick was a perfect way to fuck it all up, and Ryan did.

Or, just maybe it was a way to capitalize on the momentum and steal a possession away ?

Hmmmmmmmm

I thought it was a good call. The Texans weren't expecting it (only two defenders ran to the ball), and it only failed due to execution. Yeah, we gave up a FG, but this was a game where risks needed to be taken. Fake punt was awesome too, even though the drive didn't go anywhere.

It was a calculated risk. Not a bad call at all.
