Default Bruce Irvin vs Coples

Bruce Irvin's on pace for a 14.5-sack season. His speed is impossible to handle for almost any tackle in the NFL. What a smart pick assuming Irvin can stay on the field.

Where is Coples?
He was drafted before Coples. So what? Its 5 games into the season and Irvin would play a different position for us. I like Irvin a lot don't get me wrong but why do we always have to compare Jets players with every single other person who was drafted around him.

I wasn't a big fan of the Coples pick when it happened but he looked awesome in the preseason.

Why have 2 Maybin's out there? BruceIrvin is a situational pass rusher and a liability in the run game...furthermore, he was gone at our pick. Are you suggesting the Jets should have traded up to get him?

Too early.

Coples needs to get extended playing time before the hate can realistically be valid.

why is everyone getting on Coples he had 2 tackles for a loss and a number of QB pressures last week against a good SF OL. All this whilst the others players on the line are getting whooped

Because sacks are the big nasty statistic, and they dont realize that tackles for a loss essentially equate to the same thing.

Coples doesn't get enough playing time. But when he does play he makes his pressence felt.

While I agree sacks alone as a statistic are overrated, I can't agree that a tackle for a loss is the same as a QB sack.

QB sack you get in the head of the most important player on the field. You give a QB a good shot or 2 in the first couple series and he's going to be playing scared/hurried the entire game.

You tackle a HB or a WR in the backfield, it's very likely that play is out of his mind almost immediately and unless you can do it consistently all game isn't going to have an affect on the other teams game planning.

He's been getting pressure on the QB, just needs to make that play. I'm not worried about Coples at all, but I do think he should start

What an awful thread. Absolutely no team besides the Seahawks had Bruce Irvin anywhere near the top of the first round. Not to mention that he had numerous behavior related red flags.

Making judgments about players four weeks into their rookie season is dumb.

"Where is Coples?" is a good question to be asking right now.

The defense sucks right now. If Rex is keeping Coples off the field for players who are part of that suckage there has to be a reason and it's mysterious at the moment.

I'd hate to think Rex just doesn't like Coples at this point but we've heard Rex say bad things about maybe one player since he's coached the Jets and Coples is that player.

I'm wondering if Rex has finally reached his level of disgust with the self-entitled talent that has been brought onto the team since 2009 and he's taking it all out on the rookie?

Coples was supposed to be the best player at his position in the draft there is no excuse for him not to be on the playing field.

geez i have been banging this drum for awhile but its way too early and likely unnecessary to have this argument.

2 different players plus coples has done fine in limited time and if anyone expects him to be part of the answer in rushing the QB u are sadly mistaken. he is a DL and a run stopper first and foremost. if he gets 5-6 sax a year so be it.

irvin and jones for that matter are speed guys that are supposed to get sax - and do.

the lack of a pass rush for seemingly years just enhances the discussion and until the jets get that guy we'll always talk about it.

the bigger thing to take away from the irvin thing is the jets had an agreement with the steelers to slide to their spot in return for a second rounder. its interesting that once irvin was off the board the trade was off - that tells us that he indeed would have been the jets pick. oh well.

another thing - one of the "easiest" positions to make a splash as a rookie is at DE.

opposing tackles/offenses have no film on u and u are likely getting in on passing downs where u have 1 responsibility - get to the QB.

in contrast a DT has a much harder time working against interior lineman and playing the run as well.

not minimizing what irvin and jones are doing but just stating the obvious.

I said it in another thread, Coples and Davis should be starting. We know what we have in Devito and Scott, old, slow, mediocrities. The kids need to play to learn.
